Global Nomads

Global Nomads We are Helen and James, a couple of ex pat early retirees, slow traveling the world full time. Stay tuned as there's more to come....

My name is Helen and there's really not much I love more than taking a trip. I love it all, researching where to go, which airlines to fly with, planning the trip, reading about what exciting places I can visit and the people I will meet and the culture that exists. My second love is sharing my travels with everyone and hopefully making you feel as though you could be there too. Although my work a

nd budget mean I don't get to travel as much as I would like, I wanted to use this platform to share my experiences with you and hopefully inspire you to get up and go too! I hope you will enjoy travelling from your armchair, through cyberspace and the wonders of social media with me. Along the way I'd like to share experiences of airlines, hotels and places of interest and maybe offer some tips for your future travel.

After the excitement of the river we headed deeper in to one of the oldest rainforests in the world and a 5 hour drive (2.5 hours on a private gravel road in a 4x4) took us deep in to the Danum Valley conservation area. We spent 2 nights here walking the epic suspension bridge in the treetops a vertigo inducing 27 meters (90 feet) in height, taking night safaris and enjoying the wildlife from our balcony of our jungle chalet.

We saw a reticulated Puthon (guides were very excited as these are rare), Buffy owl, red leaf monkeys, samba deer, a variety of birds, 4 Civets (google civet p**p coffee!), a humongous tarantula, black squirrels and more! I can honestly say the closest I’ve felt to being in Pandora in real life surrounded by towering trees standing 100 meters tall (only beaten in size by the redwoods of the US) and the never ending sound of the jungle!

Our last day was 6 hours of blazing sun on the river, getting beaten around the head with low hanging branches and being literally eaten alive by mosquitoes despite the repellent….and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life! We had gone in search of a herd of critically endangered Bornean Pygmy elephants (you know I love me some ellies) and despite our guide going full on Malaysian Crocodile Dundee, hopping out of the boat barefoot with his 12 inch dagger attached at the hip with electrical cord and scurrying off in to the jungle in search of fresh tracks, we had been unsuccessful in our search. Although we had spotted more Proboscis monkeys, birds and some crocs.

About half an hour from the lodge, on our return journey, we caught sight of a bull in the deep undergrowth and off our guide went again and took us down a super narrow branch off the main river. As we dodged branches and got covered in pollen and leaves and beat back the mozzies we were left speechless at the sight of an entire herd of 12 elephants, complete with matriarch and down to playful calves, as they played and drank in the river about 30 feet ahead of us and made their way in to the plantation beyond.

It was a truly remarkable experience and those few minutes completely made the hours long search worthwhile! An experience I’ll never forget….🐘
