The Abbia game of the Beti people in southern Cameroon is a traditional game of chance played with intricately carved Elma nut tokens.

250 ethnic groups. 1 country. Meet the talking drums. They are called the “internet” because they sent instant, long-distance messages between villages before cell phones.

The Forest “Internet” (South/Center): The Beti and Ewondo peoples use the Nkul (slit drum) to mimic high/low language tones. They sent village messages way before cell phones!

Royal Vibez (West/Northwest): The Bamileke and Bamum groups drop heavy bass with massive ceremonial drums to show the chief’s (Fon) power.

Speech Shifters (North): Northern groups use hourglass tension drums under their arms. Squeezing the ropes changes the pitch so the drum literally “talks.”

These ancient 250+ rhythms are exactly what gave birth to modern Cameroonian hits like Bikutsi and Makossa!
