TOMB SWEEPING DAY

Tomb-Sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival, is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals. It is the day marking the beginning of the 5th solar term Qingming (清明, literally means clear and bright). Originated during the Spring and Autumn Period around 2500 years ago, Tomb-Sweeping Day falls between April 4th and April 6th. For the Chinese, it is a special day to remember and honor one's ancestors at grave sites. Because in the day of Hanshi (寒食, literally means cold food) which is the day before Qingming, people are not allowed to use fires to heat up food, Qingming became to share this tradition from Hanshi. As Chinese people are not used to cold food, they developed a variety of sports activities to help them make adjustments, such as hiking, riding on a swing, and playing soccer, polo, etc.

Beijing City has an amazing mixture of both old and new styles of architecture, showing China in the past and China today. As an integral part of China's history for centuries, Beijing is renowned for its traditional architecture of imperial China, best exemplified by the massive Tian'anmen, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace and the Ming Tombs. Besides, Beijing is the best place to see the Great Wall of China. Beijing of the early 21st century has witnessed tremendous growth of modern building constructions — most noticeably in the area of the Beijing Olympic Green, Beijing CBD and Beijing Financial Street.
