Robot Chef vs. Human Chef: Who Makes a Better Jian Bing?

What is Jian Bing

Known as Chinese crepes, Jian Bing/煎饼(or Jian Bing Guozi/煎饼果子) is one of the most popular breakfasts sold at street stalls in China.

It consists of wheat and grain-based crepe, an egg, deep-fried crackers (known as Bao Cui/薄脆 in Chinese), 2-3 savoury/spicy sauces, chopped scallions & coriander. Folded into an envelope, Jian Bing is usually eaten as finger food while people travel to work/school on busy morning.

Authentic Beijing Zhi Zi (Iron Griddle) Barbecue

Beijing Zhi Zi Barbecue is one of the city's most authentic and cherished traditional cuisines, known for its robust flavors and lively atmosphere. With a history spanning several centuries, it originated from the outdoor grilling of nomadic tribes and matured in Beijing's hutongs (alleys) during the Ming and Qing dynasties, becoming a unique part of the capital's culinary landscape. Ingredients and Flavors.
The focus is on the quality of the meat, traditionally using fresh lamb and beef, such as lamb hind leg or beef sirloin. The marinade is intentionally simple—often just scallions, ginger, and soy sauce—to let the natural flavors of the high-quality meat shine through. As the thin slices hit the hot griddle with a satisfying sizzle, the air fills with an irresistible aroma. The perfectly grilled meat is charred on the outside and tender inside. It is typically enjoyed with sesame seed cakes, pickled Chinese cabbage (suan cai), scallions.

Today, time-honored restaurants like Kaorou Wan and Kaorou Ji, as well as hidden hutong gems like Kaorou Liu and Yijucheng, are perfect places to savor this authentic Beijing delicacy.
