China has installed 1,288 GW of solar power, slightly overtaking its 1,285 GW of coal capacity for the first time.

Solar now accounts for 31.5% of China’s total installed electricity generation capacity, making it the country’s largest source by capacity.

China still generates more electricity from coal, with coal producing 49.7% compared with 24.6% from wind and solar combined in the first half of 2026.

Solar installations continue growing despite slower expansion this year, while rising electricity demand has pushed coal use slightly higher.

China’s rapid shift toward renewables comes as EV sales surge, oil prices rise, and the world’s largest electricity market tries to reduce emissions.

China deployed its J-16 fighter jets to Egypt for the first time, flying roughly 3,700 miles over nine hours with mid-air refuelling as part of the Eagles of Civilisation 2026 exercise, the second joint air training event between the two countries.

The drills bring together fighters, refuelling aircraft, special-mission platforms, and helicopters, focusing on air combat and improving military cooperation.

This marks a step up from last year’s exercise, which featured the lighter J-10C fighter.

Military commentator Song Zhongping called the deployment an important test of China’s aerial refuelling and logistical capabilities far from home.

In addition to suggesting that such long-range deployments could become more frequent as China works to protect its overseas interests.

China is being urged to prepare civilian ships for military use, with a Chinese researcher saying Beijing should learn from Britain’s use of commercial vessels during the 1982 Falklands War.

Britain quickly used dozens of civilian ships to carry aircraft, fuel, supplies and medical equipment during the conflict.

Chinese analyst Li Jin called for a database tracking civilian ships, including their speed, capacity, ownership and crew skills.

The plan could provide China with additional transport and supply capacity without requiring the military to maintain a much larger fleet of specialised support ships during peacetime.

But civilian ships could face major risks during war, including attacks, crew shortages and problems working under military control.

A 2,447-pound magnetic levitation vehicle accelerated from rest to 497 mph in just 5.3 seconds on a 1-kilometre test track at Donghu Laboratory in China’s Hubei province.

The run marked the platform’s third short-distance maglev acceleration world record in six months, testing electromagnetic propulsion, levitation, positioning, and braking technologies.

Magnetic forces lifted the vehicle above the guideway, eliminating wheel-rail friction, while electromagnetic coils created a travelling magnetic wave to propel it forward.

After reaching 497 mph (800 km/h), the vehicle reportedly stopped smoothly within slightly more than 656 feet, while track deviations were limited to just 0.5 millimetres.

The technology could support future ultra-high-speed transport and may eventually be adapted for electromagnetic launches of rockets and fighter jets.
