🍎 Throwback to Autumn 2012 – Apple Season in North Korea 🍂

A few weeks before our deep winter tour, we had been invited to see some new sites to promote in the DPRK. Here are some pictures of our trip to a huge apple farm. They had a shop with products ranging from apple juice to apple crisps, shampoo and soap!

📸Throwback to December 2012.

Before December 2013, the 🇰🇵DPRK’s 🇰🇵borders would close to tourism from December to mid-January.

KTG was the 1️⃣ 🏆 first travel company1️⃣ 🏆 to enter the country in December—a year before foreign tourists were officially allowed to do so.

We had been invited to explore the idea of developing proper ❄️❄️winter tours and spent that trip in the 🇰🇵DPRK🇰🇵 over 🎄Christmas🎄. While Christmas isn’t celebrated there, 24th December is a major holiday: the birthday of Kim Jong Suk, mother of Kim Jong Il.

The first photos were taken in Sariwon city.

It was an unforgettable journey (despite the bitter cold). Being the only foreigner on the train, packed with workers and students heading home, finally arriving at Pyongyang Station at around midnight and just in general having a great time with our Korean friends. Feeling like the only foreigner in the whole country (did not even see any Chinese businessmen) felt absolutely surreal.

🕰️ Throwback to Pyongyang, 2008 🇰🇵

We took this back in 2008, when very, very few Westerners had ever visited 🇰🇵North Korea🇰🇵. There were no influencers, Instagram, TikTok, etc, just a handful of curious adventurers witnessing a country that seemed frozen in time.

Pyongyang, with its 🚗 retro 70s cars🚗 , absence of mobile phones, and Soviet-style architecture, felt surreal — fascinating in the sense of isolation and timelessness we perceived back then.
