Challenge: An Asian wildlife reserve’s food waste

Solution: Insect armies eating up methane-generating leftovers

Even a nature-protecting wildlife park, zoo and resort in Singapore generates lots of food waste daily: which always bugs us since methane is a potent greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. We love how Mandai Wildlife Reserve tackles processing food waste organically by farming black soldier fly larvae and hissing cockroaches, which devour scraps in weeks. The larvae also become protein-rich feed for zoo animals, and their byproducts fertilise the gardens, representing the dream closed-loop nature-based solution: win, win, win 💚 🐛🪳♻️
