Costa Rica is getting A LOT of rain right now. But that doesn’t mean you should cross August off your travel calendar!

August is part of Costa Rica’s green season, and while rain is definitely part of the experience, it’s also one of the reasons we love this time of year.

- The rainforest is lush and vibrant.
- Waterfalls and rivers are flowing.
- Wildlife is active and the landscapes are incredibly green.
- Everything feels fresh and alive.
- And you can often find better rates and fewer crowds than during the high season.

And here’s an important Costa Rica travel secret: rain doesn't necessarily mean rain all day. Weather varies dramatically by region, and many rainy-season days bring sunshine in between the showers. And don’t worry, rain doesn’t automatically mean your activities are cancelled. Most tours and excursions operate rain or shine. In fact, rainforest walks, wildlife tours, rafting, waterfalls, and other adventures can be especially beautiful in the rain!

🌧️ Would we recommend Costa Rica in August? Absolutely.
You just need to pack a little differently, keep an open mind, and embrace the Pura Vida philosophy: sometimes the rain is part of the adventure!

Here, Mother’s Day is celebrated alongside the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15th, which is a national holiday and one of those special days when families come together to celebrate.

Costa Rica is located in an active seismic zone, which means earthquakes are a natural part of life here. The good news? A little preparation can make a big difference.

Today, Wednesday, August 12 at 10 a.m., Costa Rica will hold a nationwide emergency evacuation drill organized by the National Emergency Commission (CNE). The exercise is designed to help residents, businesses, and visitors practice what to do during an emergency including earthquakes, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, and forest fires.

If you're traveling in Costa Rica, here are a few simple earthquake tips to keep in mind:

🏠 If you’re indoors: Drop, cover, and hold on. Stay away from windows and don’t run outside while the building is shaking.

🚗 If you’re in a car: Pull over somewhere safe, away from bridges, power lines, and large structures, and remain in the vehicle until the shaking stops.

🌴 If you’re outdoors: Move away from buildings, trees, power lines, and anything that could fall.

After the shaking stops: Follow instructions from local authorities and your hotel or tour operator. Be alert for aftershocks and avoid damaged buildings.

And remember: Costa Rica is well accustomed to earthquakes. Hotels, tour operators, and local businesses have emergency procedures in place, and knowing the basics can help you stay calm and make good decisions.

Costa Rica has once again been recognized as one of the best places for Americans to retire, appearing on Forbes’ 2026 list of top retirement destinations around the world.

And we can certainly understand why!

From the beaches of two oceans and incredible biodiversity to a relaxed pace of life, relatively affordable living costs, excellent healthcare in major urban areas, and a culture that makes enjoying the outdoors part of everyday life, Costa Rica has a lot to offer retirees.

But there’s one piece of advice we would give anyone considering making Costa Rica their home:

Visit first—and really experience it.

Retiring somewhere is very different from taking a one-week vacation. Before deciding to move, spend time here in the areas you are considering. Try out the local neighborhoods, experience the climate, drive the roads, shop for groceries, explore healthcare options, and get a feel for what daily life would actually look like.

You may fall in love with the beach or discover that the cooler Central Valley is a better fit. Yesterday, August 9, was the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, a day to recognize and celebrate the cultures, traditions, languages, and contributions of Indigenous communities around the world.

Costa Rica is home to eight Indigenous peoples: Bribri, Cabécar, Maleku, Ngäbe, Brörán, Brunca, Huetar, and Chorotega. Together, they represent an important part of the country's history and cultural identity.

But there is another side to the story that is important to recognize.

For decades, Costa Rica's Indigenous communities have faced land disputes, discrimination, poverty, limited access to public services, and barriers to self-determination and justice. Indigenous territories continue to face occupation by non-Indigenous people, despite laws protecting Indigenous land rights. In some territories, more than half of the legally recognized land remains occupied by non-Indigenous residents. Indigenous leaders and communities have also faced threats and violence while defending their ancestral lands.

And yet, Indigenous communities continue to try to protect their languages, traditions, ways of eating, crafts, knowledge, and profound connections to the natural world.

As travelers, we have an opportunity to learn, listen, support Indigenous-led experiences, and recognize Indigenous communities not simply as part of Costa Rica's past, but as an essential part of its present and future. 🇨🇷

In Costa Rica addresses don't look like the addresses you're used to. Instead of a street name and house number, you might hear or see something like:

“200 meters south of the old church, 100 meters east, next to the blue house on mango street.”

And yes… that can be the actual address! 😂

Costa Rica has traditionally relied heavily on landmarks, distances, and directions rather than numbered street addresses. You might be given directions based on a church, school, supermarket, famous tree, bridge, or even a building that hasn't existed for 20 years.

📍 Common examples:

“100 meters north of the park”
“500 meters east of the school”
“From the old gas station, 2 km toward the beach”
“Next to the house with the red gate”

And don't be surprised if a local gives you directions that include something like “where the old mango tree used to be.” 🌳😂

For travelers, Google Maps and GPS coordinates have made things much easier, especially when visiting hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, and more remote destinations.

In Costa Rica, conservation isn't just about protecting forests. It’s also about helping wildlife safely navigate the places where nature and development meet.

Organizations like the Toucan Rescue Ranch have installed rope-line bridges that allow monkeys, sloths, and other tree-dwelling animals to safely cross roads and avoid dangerous power lines.

And now, Costa Rica is taking another important step.

This week, the Legislative Assembly unanimously approved a bill requiring wildlife protection measures in new and existing public infrastructure projects. The goal is to reduce wildlife deaths on roads and help reconnect fragmented habitats.

The legislation now moves to the Executive Branch for the President’s signature and publication in La Gaceta, Costa Rica’s official government newspaper.

From rope bridges to wildlife crossings, these efforts are a reminder that conservation is also about designing our communities and infrastructure with nature in mind.
