The critically endangered Lemur Leaf Frog, another member of the genus Agalychnis that I had yet to see, can prove to be relatively abundant in the right areas. A variety of issues have affected their wellbeing over time, largely linked to habitat loss exacerbated by the spread of chytrid, a combination that has seemingly devastated many populations in recent years. Fortunately the area we were in allowed for some good sightings of this species, including multiple in amplexus.

A pair of Yellow-flecked glass frogs that were found in amplexus on the banks of a small streambed. Easily one of the cooler finds we had while hiking around the property, though it’s certainly tough to choose as I look back on my photos! 😅

Horrible quality video of an incredible observation on a recent night hike with clients visiting from the United States. While walking a shallow creek bed, we came across an Allen’s coral snake tucked into a rock shelf, not moving. Initially thinking this animal was dead, we were shocked when it pulled its head out of a crevice to reveal a large eel in its mouth, as we had apparently interrupted dinner for the night. Backing up and watching from afar, we observed this beautiful snake finish his meal over the course of the next 20 minutes or so before crawling off into the leaf litter, never to be seen again. What an amazing experience!

Jumping away from Mexico and back to Costa Rica, though with members of the genus present across both fronteras, we have Porthidium nasutum. These hognose vipers inhabits cloud forest and tropical rain forest environments where they sit and wait for large periods of time, settling themselves into leaf litter and amongst logs and trunks in pursuit of an unsuspecting frog. While hiking through a small quebrada one night, I found this slate grey individual cruising along the forest floor, presumably searching for a spot to do exactly that.

It was a pleasure showing some friends from San Jose around, and even more of a treat finding this beauty!

Eyelash vipers are an incredibly variable species of arboreal snake, coming in many colors and patterns, and thriving in a variety of habitats and elevations. These animals are ambush predators, oftentimes sitting motionless in the same spot for weeks until an unsuspecting frog hops by. From there, they retreat directly to the canopy to digest their meal, before coming back down and repeating the process all over again. Locally abundant in certain areas, no two ever look the same, making it a fan favorite to encounter on our night hikes! Of course, finding them alongside a chorus of red eyed tree frogs singing makes it even better! 😜
