Big, beautiful dorado, also known as Mahi Mahi or dolphin fish, are one of the tastiest fish in the ocean. They are also one of the fastest growing fish with one of the shortest lifespans. They only live 2-4 years, five years at the most. They are plentiful offshore of Quepos, Costa Rica. And coming up in November the Marina Pez Vela will be hosting the Dorado Derby Tournament on the 14th and the Dorado Derby Dos on the 21st.

Caña Brava had a very special visitor yesterday, a 20-foot whale shark! Whale sharks are the largest living fish in the world and a rare sight in these waters. He or she came up to the boat, rubbed its head against the hull gently and seemed to enjoy being petted. It circled around the boat and stayed for a while before heading off to parts unknown.

That's one of the beautiful things about being out on the ocean; you never know what you're going to come across and every day is a new adventure!

Snapper or "pargo" in Spanish are a great eating fish commonly caught out of Quepos. There are a few ways to catch them. One is bottom fishing using chunks of previously caught fish such as black tuna. Lures will work, but probably the best way to catch them is with live bait. We generally use blue runners, which are a very fast, hard-fighting bait fish. We try to have live bait on hand, but if not available, your trip might start with a stop to catch some these feisty fish before heading out farther to fish for snapper.

Spectacular day today aboard Caña Brava, our Viking Express 43 out of Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, Costa Rica! We caught 3 sailfish, 4 wahoo, one yellow-finned tuna and a mahi mahi. It's a rare day when you catch 4 wahoo in a single day, much less in a 3/4 day trip. Lots of excitement and a ton of good eating fish to enjoy. Pura Vida!
