Most visitors to Costa Rica never make it to Bajos del Toro — and that's exactly why we love bringing people here.

It's a two-hour drive north of San José, in a cloud forest town of about 200 people, tucked between coffee farms and jungle ridges. The reward: a hidden network of turquoise waterfalls fed by mineral-rich water flowing down from Poás Volcano. You'll hike forest trails, cross a few rivers, and swim in natural pools most tourists have never heard of.

Just across the road is Catarata del Toro — a 90-meter waterfall that drops straight into an ancient volcanic crater, framed by mist, orchids, and hummingbirds darting past.

Local tip: September and October bring more rain to this part of the country, and more rain means these waterfalls run heavier and look more dramatic than any other time of year. It's one of the best windows to visit — and one of the quietest.

Thinking about a Costa Rica trip for October or November? Here's something most travel guides won't tell you.

Everyone hears 'rainy season' and pictures days of nonstop rain. In reality, most days follow a pattern: mornings are clear and sunny, and the rain rolls in later in the afternoon. If you plan outdoor stuff for the morning, you barely notice the season.

The upside nobody mentions: waterfalls run fuller, everything's greener, and the popular spots have way fewer people. It's honestly our favorite time of year to be outside.

Anyone else planning an Oct/Nov trip and getting the 'rainy season' warning from people who've never actually been then? What other months are you all considering?
