The tiny island that showed the world how to stop a disease 🩸 One in seven Cypriots carries thalassaemia, one of the highest rates on Earth. So in the 1970s Cyprus built the world's first nationwide genetic screening program and from 1983 the Church itself asked couples for a screening certificate before marrying them. Births of children with the severe form fell to almost none, and the WHO turned Nicosia's centre into a global model.

There's a corner of Cyprus that is still Britain 🇬🇧 When the island became independent in 1960, the UK kept two Sovereign Base Areas, Akrotiri and Dhekelia. 254 square kilometres, 3% of the island, its own police force, and motorways you can drive along without ever noticing you've left Cyprus. Around 18,000 people live inside them, 11,000 of them ordinary Cypriots. Only in 2022 was Cyprus allowed to start building on parts of that land, the first change in 60 years.

Every year on August 15th, Cyprus simply stops. Shops close, cities empty and the whole island heads for the villages. It is the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, the biggest summer holiday on the island, and for many pilgrims it ends at a mountain monastery guarding an icon nobody has been allowed to look at since 1669.

The cocktail invented to deceive a king 🍹 August 1946: King Farouk of Egypt checks into the Forest Park Hotel in the Troodos mountains. The story goes that a Muslim king couldn't be seen drinking, so barman Stelios Sourmelis mixed brandy, lemon and bitters into something that looked exactly like iced tea. The Brandy Sour is now Cyprus's national drink though Farouk's own biographer swears the king never drank at all. Order one and decide for yourself.

Cleopatra's island 👑 Cyprus belonged to her dynasty for centuries before Rome seized it in 58 BC. Julius Caesar handed it back to her, and by 42 BC her own governor ran the island. In 34 BC Mark Antony crowned her "Queen of Kings" over Egypt, Libya, Syria and Cyprus. A bronze coin struck in Paphos still survives, showing Cleopatra as the goddess Aphrodite with her baby son by Caesar in her arms.

The holiday island that never learned to feel dangerous.

A relic of the crucifixion, on a Cyprus mountaintop, for 1,700 years ✝️ Tradition says Saint Helena - mother of Emperor Constantine - left a fragment of the True Cross on the peak now called Stavrovouni, Mountain of the Cross. Monks still guard it in a silver reliquary, in one of the oldest monasteries on Earth - and to this day, women are not permitted inside.

The Med's party capital is built on holy ground 🍸⛪ Fifty years ago Ayia Napa was a fishing village of 200 people. Then came the first club in 1985, and now 700,000+ visitors a year. But step past the bars: a Venetian-era monastery from the 1400s still stands in the middle of the square. The name says it all - Ayia Napa means "Holy Forest".
