December in Prague has its own magic ✨
And sometimes… its own chaos too 😄
On the evening of St. Nicholas Eve 🎅🏼, I spent a wonderful full day with four friends from Maryland — Sue, Greg, Ellen, and Steve — who decided to add Prague to their Danube river cruise with Viking, sailing from Regensburg to Budapest 🚢.
What originally began as a 4-hour tour request quickly evolved — already during our e-mail exchange, before the tour — into a full-day private experience with a car, once they realized how much there is to see, feel, taste, and truly understand in Prague 🇨🇿.
Now, full honesty: that day was what we Czechs call “one of those days.”
I arrived at their hotel literally at the very last minute (running like Fantomas 🏃♀️💨), and at the end of the day I discovered I had accidentally charged them entrance fees they had already paid themselves — so yes, I ran back to the hotel to return the money 🙈.
Did they mind?
Not at all. They just smiled — kindness and grace at its best 💙
We explored Prague’s highlights — occasionally bumping into St. Nicholas, devils, and angels roaming the streets 🎅🏼😈👼 — enjoyed a classic Czech lunch at Restaurant Norbert at Strahov 🍽️, and of course tasted excellent Czech beer from their local microbrewery 🍺.
And here’s my favorite part:
These two lovely couples are in-laws — sharing two grandchildren (4 years and 18 months) 👶👶. Which naturally led me to convince them that the grandchildren must receive a little Czech Mole (Krteček) 🐾 — preferably with a book like The Mole and His Trousers or The Mole and the Little Car.
We even talked about Czech puppets especially Spejbl & Hurvínek — a tradition enjoyed by my grandparents, parents, myself, and later my own children 🎭.
Moments like this are exactly why I love being a guide.
