During VeloNotte 🚴 Hamburg 13 September, a simple bike ride becomes a rolling theatre, where the evening streets turn into a living film set. As your wheels spin, history sidles up beside you—whispering tales, cracking jokes, and sometimes breaking into song.

At every pause, historians spill the city’s best-kept secrets, while original soundtrack & immersive performances embrace you and drive back in time to Hamburg’s Wirtschaftswunder days, — 1950-60s. One moment you’re swaying to the Beatles’ earliest riffs right, the next you’re gliding into the haze of the building of the first postwar football stadium that vanished decades ago—only to reappear for this one night.

Here, the past isn’t told, it’s performed. You’re not in the audience—you are the scene. Bonus points if you arrive dressed to match; do you still keep something from your grandparents’ house?)) A dash of rebellious swagger welcome

Because this isn’t just a bike tour.
It’s Hamburg, exhaling its postwar Renaissance straight into your handlebars.

Join the night, ride with us!

ABOUT VELONOTTE, SOME HIGHLIGHTS. 🚴 We see cities full of treasures — from the very periphery to center, there’s so much to tell. The founder of the project, Sergey Nikitin-Rimsky, is an urban researcher, teacher and musician, who curates the editions with local colleagues.

From Rome to London, Istanbul to Verona, VeloNotte international has guided hundreds & thousands of participants through city secrets and iconic sites. Leading architects, researchers become speakers of the VeloNotte. Immersive performances and original music enhance the spectator’s experience — making this work like a collective bike-powered time-machine.

Since the start, our mission has been to celebrate heritage and urban landscape, engaging with citizens, tourists, and local leaders to help rediscover their neigborhoods with new eyes, renew connections to place, and promote green, creative, and culture-centered life.

VeloNotte was featured in the leading medias, from Domus and Abitare to Corriere della Sera, Evening Standard to Time Out London.

We know medias is the real thing, and Hamburg is the Media metropole of Germany par excellence. During Velonotte, you will hear Jeffrey Matthews focus on the cultural impact of radio NDRW (currently .de) and the works of Wolfgang Borchert (1921-1947), — a pivotal post-war writer whose play was included into a school program in Germany as a symbol of Trümmerliteratur — “Ruin Literature”.

Prof. Matthews discovered Hamburg first as a student, then as a researcher and visiting lecturer, and penned a book “Hamburg: A Cultural History”. He is actually professor of modern European cultures at the University of Manchester, and also a member of the German History Society and the German Studies Association.

As we cycle through Hamburg’s historic neighborhoods, Matthews will talk about connections between BBC & NDRW and how this immediate postwar period influenced radio format for decades. That’s not all: a theater performance will accompany this story.

Don’t miss this rare chance to dive into Hamburg’s history on the two wheeld with stories, music & performances.

What about Brutalism? Hamburg has a lot to offer (even though they’ve demolished the Postamt 60).
Renowned architecture historian OLAF BARTELS has written a book about Langmaack architects, whose legacy included modernist churches.

As we design the VeloNotte 🚲 🚲 route through 1940s–60s Hamburg, one place we simply can’t miss is the breathtaking St. Nikolai Hauptkirche, a bold brutalist masterpiece by Gerhard Langmaack This striking design stands out from the rest of Langmaack’s work — and thanks to Prof. Bartels, you’ll discover the fascinating story behind it. 🏗️🔍

Join us and book now your Early-bird saddle in the VeloNotte Hamburg bike ride on September 13, 2025.

🌙 Pedal with us into the past and uncover the secrets of Hamburg’s mid-century modernism!
🚲 Seats are limited—book your saddle 👉 at the VeloNotte website.
