A ‘dry’ post in our otherwise not-so-dry January: a must-do in our homebase Mainz - besides wine-touring with BottleStops - is a visit to the Gutenberg Museum. Gutenberg as in: the guy who invented book printing with movable styles. Since the official museum is closed for renovations, the key exhibits, the world’s first printed bibles, have been moved to a temporary location. And this temporary show is so well presented, it absolutely deserves a post in BotttleStops wineline: historic building, a great storyline, interactive displays, stunning exhibits … all blended to an immersive experience. Not really an Ersatz for the old museum, but a great little gem.

Quick break to fatten myself on the flavors of the Maghreb (and some sunshine, too). The winetasting and liquid lunch was arranged by my lovely colleague at .caravans . Just a little more of this and I will be ready again to lead our Christas-infused wine tours back home.

Val d’Argan is amongst the most southern wineries of the northern hemisphere, sits smack on the 30’s northern parallel, off Essaouira in Morocco. The red - Fleurs du Val - turned out to be surprisingly light, fruit forward and very quaffable in slightly chilled mode… perfect with the salads and the bbq skewers that followed (needed to stay light-handed on the harrissa though).

Yesterday’s blind tasting had us tapping around these couple of bottles. The topic: ‘underrated varietals’. Now, it’s certainly debatable what underrated may be… but for germany there was twice a Pinot Blanc, a Scheurebe, and twice a Portugieser!

It’s been a while since the last time I took my guests to Gunderloch’s in Rheinhessen, and I wonder how this outstanding estate has ever slipped off my winetour-radar. I suppose my personal highlight was to get the current owner’s personal insights into balancing tradition and innovation in winemaking (danke Johannes! ).

Schloß Lieser wines are 5* in almost all guides… but they still gain when tasted in the Haag family’s gorgeous tasting room. Lovely place!

Historic cellar for future wines… thoroughly enjoyed tasting Mosel Piwis at the Mosel Vision event. Quite a popular launch…17 vintners and not enough space to swing a cat around. As for the wines: my money is on Cabernet Blanc!
