Today’s magical visit to South Plaza Island was a true celebration of nature! We were surrounded by the elegance of swallow-tailed gulls, caring for their fluffy little chicks nestled among the cliffs.

These stunning seabirds—the only nocturnal gulls in the world—are endemic to the Galápagos, and watching them in their native habitat was unforgettable. Their bright red eyes and graceful flight at dusk are nothing short of enchanting. Fun fact: one of these rare gulls was even spotted years ago in Washington State, far from its island home—proof that nature still holds surprises! 🐣🌊💫

Today, during our visit to Rábida Island, we observed several American oystercatchers along the red sand beach. These striking shorebirds, with their bright orange beaks and contrasting black and white plumage, were actively foraging along the shoreline. It was fascinating to watch them skillfully feed on small crustaceans, using their strong bills to pry open shells and probe the sand.

Their presence added a special highlight to our morning walk along this uniquely colored beach

During the rainy season in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island, we had the chance to observe the giant tortoises of the Galápagos in their natural habitat. This time of year is like a paradise for them, as the lush vegetation provides plenty of green fruits to eat and abundant fresh water to drink. It was incredible to see these ancient creatures roaming freely through the misty forest.

One of the highlights of our visit to Santiago Island is the stop at the Grottos in Puerto Egas, one of the best places in the Galápagos to observe the elusive fur sea lion, also known as the two-haired sea lion.

These marine mammals seek refuge in the shade of the lava grottos, where they can escape the intense heat of the sun. Unlike the Galápagos or California sea lion, which can often be seen resting on open beaches, the fur seal comes from colder regions of South America and even Antarctic waters, and therefore cannot tolerate high temperatures.

Fur seals are generally smaller, have thicker fur, and are more reclusive than the more social and vocal Galápagos sea lions, which are larger and more commonly seen along the shores.

The marine iguana is one of the most incredible creatures you can encounter in the Galápagos Islands. It’s the only lizard in the world that has adapted to life in the ocean, diving beneath the waves to feed on algae growing on underwater rocks.

With their salt-excreting glands, strong claws for gripping slippery surfaces, and their ability to shrink in size during food shortages, marine iguanas are a true symbol of survival and evolution. Their unique appearance—dark, dragon-like scales and a flattened tail for swimming—makes them a favorite among wildlife lovers.

Come with Equinoxtours to Galápagos and spot these remarkable reptiles in their natural volcanic habitat!

The Galápagos Flycatcher is a remarkably curious and charming bird, often catching the attention of visitors with its bold behavior.

Today, during our visit to Espumilla Beach on Santiago Island, we witnessed a particularly fascinating interaction: one of these beautiful birds became intrigued by a guest’s camera lens, fluttering close and even attempting to perch on it.

It seemed that the lens’s reflection, perhaps acting like a mirror, sparked the bird’s curiosity—possibly mistaking its own image for another flycatcher. Moments like this made our visit truly spectacular, surrounded by surprises and the unique wildlife that makes the Galápagos so unforgettable.

During our visit to Cerro Dragón on Santa Cruz Island, we were amazed by the lush green vegetation that has flourished across the landscape. The once dry terrain is now vibrant and alive, providing the perfect habitat for the iconic Galápagos land iguanas. We saw these impressive reptiles scattered throughout the area, drinking water and feeding freely among the greenery—a true sign of a thriving ecosystem.

Today on North Seymour Island, we observed various stages in the life cycle of the magnificent frigatebird.

Among them was a juvenile nearing adulthood, already showing a partially inflated red gular pouch—signaling the beginning of courtship behavior—yet still displaying white feathers on its head, indicating it had not fully matured. In contrast, the chicks were completely covered in soft, fluffy white down, staying close to their nests and parents.

Meanwhile, the fully grown adult males stood out with their entirely black plumage, including a glossy black head, and their striking red throat pouches fully developed for display.

Today’s journey took us to the magical island of Genovesa, where nature’s wonders unfolded before our eyes.

We witnessed a tender moment between a pair of great frigatebirds, the male and female locked in a near-embrace after a long and graceful courtship—her acceptance marking the beginning of new life, as they prepare to welcome a chick in the coming weeks.

Nearby, a red-footed b***y stood elegantly on a red mangrove, its vivid colors glowing in the soft light. Along the serene shores of Darwin Bay, an adult Nazca b***y rested peacefully, completing our unforgettable day among the seabirds of paradise.

During our snorkeling experience at Isla Rápida, we had the incredible opportunity to swim among a vibrant array of colorful fish, including schools of dusky chubs. The crystal-clear waters revealed an underwater world full of life, and one of the highlights was encountering graceful green sea turtles gliding peacefully around us. It was a truly unforgettable moment in nature.

On Rápida Island, we witnessed a truly unique moment in nature: a striated heron, silently stalking along the shoreline, suddenly lunged forward and caught a lava lizard in its beak.

With a swift motion, the bird tossed the lizard into the air and, in one fluid movement, swallowed it whole. The scene lasted only seconds, but the precision and speed of the heron’s strike left us in awe—it was a raw and rare glimpse into the predator-prey dynamic of the Galápagos.
