A new surprise has emerged in the Giza Pyramids area, as if the opening of the museum for the Great Egyptian Pyramid was a harbinger of good news.
An Egyptian-German research team announced a massive and exciting archaeological discovery. While working, they detected two previously unknown voids inside the Pyramid of Menkaure, the smallest of the Great Pyramids of Giza. All of this was achieved without any excavation or demolition.
Researchers from Cairo University and the University of Munich used highly advanced imaging techniques, such as radar, ultrasound, and electrical resistivity.
These techniques revealed two air-filled voids located behind the eastern face of the pyramid, at a depth of approximately 1.25 meters beneath the stones.
The first void is about one meter high and one and a half meters wide, while the second is slightly smaller.
Scientists believe these voids could be internal passageways, or even a hidden entrance leading to a burial chamber or an internal passage that has yet to be discovered!
The eastern facade in particular has puzzled scientists for years due to the massive blocks of polished granite it contains. This led researchers in 2019 to hypothesize the existence of a secret entrance on this side, and this discovery brings us one step closer to proving that hypothesis!
Although the Pyramid of Menkaure is the smallest (approximately 65 meters high), it is unique and very intriguing. Pink granite, brought from Aswan, was used in its construction, giving it stunning architectural precision.
Its lower chambers have a complex design, different from the burial styles we see in other pyramids.
Researchers say that this pyramid may have been modified after the death of King Menkaure.
Scientists are currently working to create a detailed 3D map of the pyramid's internal structure within the next year.
If these voids turn out to be a new entrance or chamber, it will be the first major architectural discovery in the Pyramid of Menkaure in over a century!
What could be hidden behind this secret entrance? Will we discover a new burial chamber?
