In Abu Simbel, at the southernmost tip of Egypt, the two temples stand as monumental stone witnesses to a story that embodies both military glory and profound, passionate love.

At the Great Temple, the regal majesty of Ramses II is revealed through four colossal statues that defy the passage of time. They were crafted with such geometric precision that the sun pierces the temple’s darkness twice a year to kiss the King’s face within the Holy of Holies.

Just a short distance away, the stone radiates tenderness at the Small Temple, dedicated to his beloved wife, Nefertari. There, the King broke with prevailing Pharaonic artistic conventions by carving his wife’s statue on the façade at the same scale as his own, and by inscribing upon the walls the immortal words that encapsulated her place in his heart: "She for whom the sun shines."
