Official Travel Advice
• The UK Foreign Office confirms that Hurghada and other Red Sea resorts remain SAFE and are NOT under any travel advisories.
Only areas like North Sinai or close to the Libyan border are flagged as higher risk.

• The US State Department assigns Egypt a Level 2 advisory—meaning: exercise increased caution. It advises avoiding North and Central Sinai, the Western Desert, and border zones.

• Australian Smartraveller echoes similar caution: while tourism hotspots like Hurghada remain generally safe, vigilance is essential, especially near protest sites.

Local Conditions & Safety 👮‍♀️

• General Vibe: Hurghada remains welcoming and secure for tourists, with strong infrastructure geared to safety and hospitality.

• Security Measures: Hotels, airports, and major sites are equipped with metal detectors and enhanced surveillance. Escorts and briefings for tours are common in Nile Valley and Red Sea regions.

Maritime Safety & Recent Incidents ℹ️

• Submarine Disaster (March 2025): A Sindbad submarine sank off Hurghada, resulting in six deaths and multiple injuries. The incident highlighted lapses in safety protocols despite the vessel being licensed.

• Broader Maritime Risks: In recent years, diving and boat-related accidents—including capsizings, fires, and shark attacks—have occurred, contributing to broader concerns about Red Sea excursion safety. Authorities are under pressure to improve standards.

Terrorism in Hurghada: History & Context 🚔
• Past Attacks:
• In 2016, a stabbing incident at a Hurghada hotel injured multiple tourists and was claimed by ISIS.
• In 2017, an attacker killed two German tourists in separate beach stabbings.
• Current Threat Levels: While the overall risk is categorized as low in resort zones, terrorism remains a consideration. Visitors are advised to avoid demonstrations and remain alert, especially in crowded or religious areas.

Summary Table: Hurghada Safety Snapshot ✅

⭐️Overall Safety Generally safe in tourist zones; resorts like Hurghada are well regulated.
⭐️ No warnings for Hurghada from UK;
⭐️US & Australian advise caution in wider Egypt.

⭐️Marine Excursions Increased scrutiny after recent accidents
⭐️Terrorism Risk = Low in Hurghada; past incidents underscore need for general vigilance.

✅Tips for Tourists

• Book boat and submarine tours only with operators that can demonstrate clear safety protocols, emergency procedures, and proper certifications.

• Avoid remote or unregulated boat trips—prioritize fully licensed and insured providers.

• Stay vigilant around demonstrations and avoid crowded or politically sensitive areas.

• Maintain basic safety habits: secure belongings, avoid isolated areas at night, and always carry ID.

Overall, Hurghada remains a popular and mostly safe holiday destination, especially if you remain informed and cautious—especially around watersports or political events.

Here are the Top 10 Travel Tips for visiting Hurghada, including the best time of year to go, how to prepare, and what to expect 🌞✈️🇪🇬

🌍 Top 10 Tips for Visiting Hurghada, Egypt

🗓️ 1. Best Time to Visit

October to April is the most comfortable time to visit:
• Daytime temps: 22°C – 30°C (ideal for beach and trips)
• Cool evenings: Pack a light jacket
• No extreme heat, and sea is still warm enough to swim

Avoid July–August if you don’t like extreme heat — it can reach 40+°C, especially inland.

🏖️ 2. Book Hotels with Heated Pools in Winter

Hurghada’s winter sun is amazing, but the sea can be chilly between Dec–Feb.

Look for hotels with heated pools if you plan to swim.
Popular options include:
• Sunrise Resorts
• Jaz Aquamarine
• Desert Rose
(Always check directly with the hotel to confirm!)

💸 3. Use Egyptian Pounds (EGP) for Best Prices

While dollars and euros are accepted in tourist areas, you’ll get the best value using EGP.
• Use local ATMs (like Banque Misr or CIB)
• Tipping in small notes (10–20 EGP) is appreciated

🧴 4. Bring Strong Sun Protection Year-Round

Even in January, the sun can be strong. Bring:
• SPF 30+ sunscreen
• After-sun lotion
• Sunglasses and a hat

🐠 5. Don’t Miss a Snorkeling or Island Trip

Hurghada is famous for its crystal-clear waters and coral reefs.
Top excursions include:
• Giftun Island
• Paradise Island
• Dolphin House

Ask if snorkel gear, lunch, and transfers are included before booking.

🚕 6. Use inDrive App or Pre-Arrange Transport

Hurghada doesn’t use meters in taxis.
• Use the inDrive app to set your own price and avoid haggling
• Or ask your hotel to arrange airport and tour transport

🧼 7. Pack Hand Sanitiser & Rehydration Salts

Like anywhere, new food and water can upset your stomach.
Bring:
• Travel-size sanitiser
• Oral rehydration sachets or electrolytes
• Avoid tap water – drink bottled only

👗 8. Dress Comfortably but Respectfully

Hurghada is more relaxed than Cairo, but modesty is still appreciated:
• Swimsuits are fine at resorts and beaches
• Light, airy clothing is best in the heat

📸 9. Respect Locals When Filming

It’s okay to film in tourist areas, but avoid recording:
• Police, military, or checkpoints
• Local women or children without permission

🧳 10. Don’t Overpack — Shopping Is Cheap!

You can buy most things cheaper in Hurghada:
• Beach towels, flip flops, clothes, perfumes, toys
• Local markets and Senzo Mall offer great deals
Leave space in your suitcase for souvenirs!

🎯 BONUS TIP:

Stay at least 7 days to truly enjoy the sea, markets, day trips, and marina nights — Hurghada isn’t just for relaxing, there’s so much to explore 🇪🇬✨

Here are 15 more Hurghada travel tips to help you feel confident, stay safe, and enjoy every moment — whether it’s your first visit or your fifth 🌴🇪🇬

🌟 More Hurghada Travel Tips (Bonus 15)

🧳 11. Visa On Arrival at the Airport
• You’ll need a tourist visa for Egypt (valid for 30 days).
• Buy it before passport control at the Hurghada Airport bank kiosk for $25 USD.
• You can pay in USD, GBP, or Euros (exact change helps).

📶 12. Buy a Local SIM Card
• Buy a Vodafone or Orange SIM at the airport or city shops.
• Data is cheap and great for Google Maps, inDrive, or booking trips.
• Bring an unlocked phone and ask them to activate it for you.

🚻 13. Public Toilets May Require Small cash
• Always carry 5–10 EGP for public restrooms.
• Tissues or wipes are handy — toilet paper isn’t always available.

🐪 14. Don’t Ride Animals for Photos
• Camel and horse rides on beaches may be unsafe or unethical.
• Instead, book a desert safari or camel ride from a trusted tour operator.

🏥 15. Travel Insurance is a Must
• Medical care is available but private clinics charge in cash.
• Travel insurance helps cover:
• Medical emergencies
• Lost luggage
• Trip delays or cancellations

🌇 16. Visit the Marina at Night
• The vibe completely changes after sunset: glowing lights, music, families walking.
• Shops, cafes, and restaurants stay open late — often past midnight!

🐠 17. Respect Coral & Marine Life
• Never touch or stand on coral while snorkeling — it kills the reef.
• Don’t collect shells, sea stars, or coral — it’s illegal and damaging to the ecosystem.

📷 18. Senzo Mall is Great for Shopping
• Air-conditioned and tourist-friendly.
• Great for clothing, electronics, groceries, and fast food like KFC and McDonald’s.

🌅 19. Take a Sunset Quad Bike or Desert Safari
• Ride into the desert, visit a Bedouin village, and watch the sun set over the dunes.
• Wear a scarf and sunglasses — it gets dusty!

🌬️ 20. Winter Winds Can Be Chilly
• Even in December or January with sunshine, wind makes it feel cooler.
• Bring a light hoodie or cardigan, especially for boat trips.

🐾 21. Be Kind to Stray Animals
• Hurghada has many friendly stray cats and dogs.
• Some hotels and cafes help feed or rescue them.
• Don’t worry — most are not aggressive and just looking for food or affection.

📦 22. Pack Mosquito Repellent
• Especially in spring/autumn, bring spray or roll-on repellent.
• Some hotels offer plug-in devices at night, but not all.

🧼 23. Ask for “No Ice”
• In street cafés or smaller shops, avoid ice in drinks unless you trust their water source.
• Stick to sealed bottled water and clean restaurants.

💳 24. Most Places Are Cash-Based
• Carry small EGP notes — many taxis, cafés, and markets don’t take cards.
• Big hotels and supermarkets accept Visa/Mastercard.

💬 25. Learn a Few Arabic Words

A little Arabic goes a long way:
• Shukran = Thank you
• La, shukran = No thank you
• Bikam? = How much?
• Sabah el kheir = Good morning
• Mafiish mushkila = No problem

Locals really appreciate the effort!

Here are the key facts about sharks in Hurghada, Egypt – especially useful if you’re planning a trip and want to stay safe and informed:

🦈 SHARK FACTS IN HURGHADA

🗺️ Where is Hurghada?

Hurghada is on the Red Sea coast of Egypt, known for clear water, coral reefs, snorkeling, diving, and marine wildlife – including some species of sharks.

🔍 ARE THERE SHARKS IN HURGHADA?

Yes – the Red Sea is home to sharks, but shark attacks are very rare in Hurghada. Most species stay in deeper waters and avoid human contact.

🦈

⚠️ SHARK INCIDENTS IN HURGHADA
• Incidents are extremely rare – but have happened.

• In June 2023, a fatal shark attack occurred near Dream Beach (south of Hurghada).

• Egyptian authorities closed some beaches temporarily and increased patrols.

• Attacks usually happen due to:

• Feeding sharks (by humans)

• Fishing waste dumped in the sea

• Swimming alone in deep open water

July 3–4, 2022: Two Fatal Attacks Near Hurghada

• Two women—a 68‑year‑old Austrian and a Romanian tourist—were attacked separately near Sahl Hasheesh, just south of Hurghada.

• Both fatalities occurred within 600 m (~2,000 ft) of each other; the same shark may have been involved .

• Authorities closed off that section of coastline for several days and launched investigations .

Broader Red Sea Context & Other Incidents

• December 2024, Marsa Alam (Red Sea resort ~200 km south): An Italian tourist was killed by a mako shark outside the swimming zone. Another tourist who tried to help survived with injuries. A scientific investigation later confirmed the species as mako and cited overfishing and restricted swimming-area use as critical risk factors .

• 2015 & 2018: Two separate fatal shark attacks killed tourists off Red Sea beaches—one German (2015) and one Czech (2018) .

• December 2010, Sharm el‑Sheikh (≈200 km south): Within five days there were five attacks—four injuries and one fatality (German woman) by oceanic whitetip and mako sharks. This triggered beach closures and changes in local regulations .

🧠 WHY DO SHARK ATTACKS HAPPEN?
• Sharks don’t usually hunt humans. Attacks are often a mistaken identity (thinking swimmers are seals or fish).

• Sudden splashing or shiny jewelry can attract curiosity.

• Swimming far from shore in deeper waters increases the risk, although still very low.

✅ SAFETY TIPS FOR SWIMMING & SNORKELING
1. Swim in designated areas where lifeguards are present.

2. Avoid swimming at dawn/dusk (when sharks are more active).

3. Never swim alone – always stay in groups.

4. Don’t wear shiny jewelry – it can resemble fish scales.

5. Stay away from fishing boats or areas with fish waste.

6. Don’t feed fish or sharks.

7. Avoid murky waters where visibility is low.

🐠 IS IT SAFE TO SNORKEL & DIVE IN HURGHADA?

Yes! Hurghada is one of the world’s top diving and snorkeling spots, and millions of tourists safely enjoy the Red Sea every year.

Shark sightings by divers are usually exciting, not dangerous.

📢 WHAT HAPPENS IF A SHARK IS SPOTTED?

• Beaches may be temporarily closed for safety.

• Local authorities and tourism police are usually quick to respond.

• Dive centers and hotels are informed and follow safety rules.

🌍 Why the Rise in Shark Attacks?

Marine biologists and dive experts suggest several contributing factors:

• Increased tourism and more swimmers in open water around reefs.

• Illegal feeding or fish chum by divers and fishermen, which can lure sharks closer to shore.
• Overfishing, leading sharks to hunt nearer to the coast in search of prey.

• Marine heatwaves and ecological imbalances, making shark behavior less predictable .

✅ Are Shark Attacks More Common Now in Hurghada?

Yes—before 2022, no confirmed shark bite incidents were recorded in Hurghada itself. Starting that year, three fatal attacks occurred in rapid succession:
• Two in July 2022,
• One in June 2023,
• Along with another fatality in December 2024 in nearby Marsa Alam.

These marked a significant uptick in previously rare events .

🧭 Safe Swimming Tips Based on Recent Cases

• Stay within designated swimming zones, especially near jetties or reefs.

• Obey beach closures, which may happen suddenly after a spotting or attack.

• Avoid deep or murky water areas, particularly outside monitored zones.

• No swimming during early morning or dusk, when shark activity may increase.

• Refrain from fish-feeding or disposing of leftovers at sea—these practices attract sharks.

📝 Final summary
• Hurghada has recorded more shark attacks than previously noted, with three confirmed fatal incidents since 2022—a clear departure from earlier years when no attacks were documented.

• While shark attacks remain very rare relative to the volume of tourism, the recent rise has led to increased scrutiny and tighter safety monitoring.

1. Hurghada has a Shark-Friendly Ecosystem

• Hurghada Grand Aquarium showcases nurse sharks, providing education on the species native to the Red Sea .

• Sharks in the Red Sea—including reef sharks, hammerheads, and oceanic whitetips—are naturally curious but typically shy and keep their distance unless disturbed .

2. Most Sharks Are Harmless to Humans

• Reef sharks (grey, blacktip, whitetip) are the most frequently seen and are generally passive and non-aggressive .

• Whale sharks, often spotted in warmer months, are harmless filter feeders that glide by ignoring humans entirely .

3. Rich Shark Biodiversity in the Red Sea

• Up to 44 shark species are recorded in the Red Sea. Surrounded by coral reefs and drop-offs, the region supports a genuinely diverse underwater ecosystem .

• Researchers can expand our knowledge through organizations like Red Sea Sharks and the OnlySharks Project, encouraging respectful encounters and citizen science contributions .

🧘 Why Divers and Snorkelers Still Enjoy Hurghada

• Many divers describe shark sightings as magical moments, not perilous ones. For example, a diver recalled seeing a small whitetip reef shark as “magical—not scary at all!” .

• Dive sites around Brothers Islands, Daedalus Reef, and Elphinstone Reef regularly offer safe, exciting sightings of reef sharks, hammerheads, tiger sharks, and even whale sharks—under professional supervision .

✅ Shark-Safe Guidelines from Experts & Authorities

Egypt’s Official Safety Measures (since May 2025)

• Lifeguards must mark deep water zones (~2 m depth) and hold watchtowers ≥ 5 m high. Fast rescue boats and first aid must be on hand.

• Vacationers are prohibited from swimming in fishing areas, at dawn/dusk, while injured, or wearing reflective jewelry. Guides explain local marine hazards in advance .

Best Practices from Diving & Conservation Groups

• Swim and dive in authorized zones—never alone or at night—under the guidance of a licensed instructor .

• Avoid fish feeding or disposing of leftovers at sea—these behaviors change shark habits and attract them closer .

• If you spot a shark, stay calm, keep eye contact, and move slowly to allow the shark space—and exit gently if needed .

🧭 Quick Summary Table

🌟 In Short
• Most sharks in the Hurghada area are reef species that avoid human interaction and provide incredible diving experiences.

• Informed behavior, diving with certified professionals, and strict safety protocols make swimming and diving in the Red Sea very safe.

• Shark sightings are rare—but thrilling—and modern tourism practices ensure you can admire these majestic creatures while minimizing risk.
