Temple of Hatshepsut is one of Egypt’s most iconic ancient sites. Her original name for it was Djeser-Djeseru, meaning "Holy of Holies" πŸ›οΈ
1. Location & History
β€’ Where: Deir el-Bahari, West Bank of Luxor, built right into the cliffs of Mount el-Qurna
β€’ When: Built around 1479 BC during the 18th Dynasty, New Kingdom
β€’ Who: Commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut, one of Egypt’s few female pharaohs. She ruled for ∼22 years. Her architect was Senenmut
2. Why the design is unique
Unlike traditional Egyptian temples, it’s built on 3 huge terraces cut into the mountain:
The clean, linear colonnades make it look surprisingly modern for something 3,500 years old. People call it "Egypt’s Parthenon."
3. Stories on the walls
1. Divine Birth: Reliefs claim the god Amun was her father, legitimizing her rule as a female king
2. Punt Expedition: First recorded major sea trade mission in history. She brought back myrrh trees, frankincense, ebony, ivory, and live animals from Punt, likely modern-day Somalia/Eritrea
3. Coronation: Scenes showing her being crowned as Pharaoh, wearing the male king’s kilt and false beard
4. What happened later
After she died, Thutmose III, her stepson, defaced many of her images and cartouches to erase her legacy. Much later, Christians used it as a monastery, which gave the site its Arabic name "Deir el-Bahari" = "Northern Monastery."
The low :
Had a causeway lined with sphinxes leading to the Nile + exotic gardens
The middle :
Famous "Punt Colonnade" showing her trade expedition, and "Chapel of Hathor"
Upper :
The sanctuary of Amun + chapels of Anubis and Hathor + Osiride statues of Hatshepsut
