الرياح الشمسية هي تدفق مستمر من الجسيمات المشحونة (البلازما) من الشمس. تتكون الرياح الشمسية من الإلكترونات والبروتونات، وهي تتحرك بسرعة تصل إلى 1.5 مليون ميل في الساعة. تتفاعل الرياح الشمسية مع المجال المغناطيسي للأرض، مما يخلق الشفق القطبي. يمكن أن تتسبب الرياح الشمسية أيضًا في انقطاع التيار الكهربائي ومشاكل أخرى في البنية التحتية. تتفاعل الرياح الشمسية أيضًا مع الطبقات العليا من الغلاف الجوي للأرض، مما يتسبب في ارتفاع درجة الحرارة. هذا الارتفاع في درجة الحرارة يسمى "الأسهاب الحراري". الأسهاب الحراري هو أحد العوامل التي تتحكم في مناخ الأرض. يمكن أن تؤثر الرياح الشمسية أيضًا على الطقس على الأرض. يمكن أن تتسبب في حدوث عاصفة مغناطيسية، وهي عاصفة ناتجة عن تفاعل الرياح الشمسية مع المجال المغناطيسي للأرض. يمكن أن تسبب العواصف المغناطيسية انقطاع التيار الكهربائي ومشاكل أخرى في البنية التحتية. كما أنها يمكن أن تتسبب في حدوث اضطرابات في الراديو والبث التلفزيوني. وكالات فضاء مثل ناسا وغيرها تستخدم معدات خاصة لقياس خواص هذه الموجات.
