Once again we had an outstanding holiday in Egypt! One of our last stops was Siwa Oasis located deep in the western desert. Siwa is known for it’s striking salt water pools and architecture that is frozen in time.

The pools comprise of 95% salt, so you can effortlessly float on the surface of the water.

Zār is a community healing ritual of drumming and dancing whose tradition is carried on mainly by women (men have the secondary roles).

The women of Mazaher-Umm Sameh, Umm Hassan, and Nour el Sabah, are among the last remaining Zār (زار) practitioners in Egypt.

This trance inducing ancient exorcism ritual is believed to have found its way into Egypt in the 19th century, and sadly it is on the verge of fizzling out.

We were privileged enough to witness this incredible art form while in Cairo at the Egyptian Centre for Culture and Arts.

If you ever find yourself in Cairo on a Wednesday, we highly recommend rsvping for this performance.

This is not a holiday, but a time to respectfully reflect on immense loss.

As settlers it is also a time to reflect on the uncomfortable truth-that we benefited from, and continue to benefit from these crimes against humanity.
The least we can do is learn, and practice compassion.

This is not a thing of the past.
Indigenous peoples are still struggling.
