Dahab’s Blue Hole: Topography, Marine Life & Site Structure
🗺️ 1. Geography & Natural Formation
The Blue Hole:
A massive natural circular sinkhole in the reef, measuring about 150 meters wide and 110 meters deep.
The Arch: An underwater gallery connecting the hole to the open sea, spanning 26 meters long with its ceiling starting at a depth of 52 meters.
Site Access: Originally restricted by a narrow rocky pass, a paved overland route was opened in 2004 to accommodate all vehicles.
🏔️ 2. El Bells Formation
Location: Situated 250 meters north of the Blue Hole, accessible via a short walking track along the coast.
Geological Structure: A vertical chimney/crack in the reef wall open to the sea, featuring a series of bell-shaped cavities and an arch at 26 meters depth standing 6 to 7 meters high.
🪸 3. Marine Life & Ecosystem
The Saddle: A shallow reef pass linking the open sea to the Blue Hole at a depth of 6 to 7 meters.
Reef Structure: A sheer drop-off wall covered in brown Star Coral (Pachyseris speciosa), soft corals, black corals, and Elephant Ear Sponges (Ianthella basta).
Marine Species: Home to anemones hosting anemonefish, along with dense schools of Scalefin Anthias (Pseudanthias squamipinnis), butterflyfish, and angelfish.
