💙As continent chasers and proud husband and wife adventurers from Ireland, travel has always been a huge part of our journey—especially with my husband living life to the fullest with cystic fibrosis.

We’re so inspired to see Cystic Fibrosis Ireland organizing a ⛰️Machu Picchu trek—a powerful way to raise awareness and support for those living with CF.

This isn’t just a trek. It’s a statement. A challenge. And a celebration of resilience.

Cystic Fibrosis is Ireland's most common genetically inherited disease. With 1100+ CF Patients, Ireland has the highest proportion of CF people in the world. Match Report
LFVA Jornada 12
Daya Nueva Veteranos vs Aspe U.D. Veteranos
Sunday 2nd March 2025.

🇬🇧The boys from Daya Nueva Veteranos finally took to the field after a three week absence from league action with a home fixture against Aspe U.D. Veteranos. Daya have had a terrible run of results so far in 2025 with no wins or draws since the turn of the year. Our last outing saw us on the wrong end of a 9-0 hammering in the cup which was the catalyst for change. With a recent transfer window open it gave Daya the opportunity to add to the squad. Not that there wasn't enough quality in the current squad, but it is always good to freshen up a squad, particularly a team low on confidence and struggling with injuries and absences. This last few months of the season is a chance for Daya to build and show what they really can do. Today would be a stern test against a team with a fine history in the LFVA league, narrowly missing out in previous league campaigns as runners up. Aspe U.D. have a fine tradition of producing good footballers, so today would be a tough test for Daya Nueva Veteranos.

After another successful transfer window, Daya are slowly, but surely, adding real quality and character to an already special squad. Results and performances haven't been going our way, but there are a multitude of reasons for this, which has been identified. Consistent squad selection has proven to be the biggest hurdle for the team and the lack of a permanent manager. The boys know that when we get everyone together, playing to a set structure, then we can take on anybody in this league. After a couple of weeks break it was great for Daya to welcome back Craig Burns after a long absence, Jose Gallardo and Declan Houlihan from injury and Jimmy Brennecke and Piotr Skwierz who missed the last game. New signing Mark Nuttall was finally cleared to play with more new signings watching on in today's crowd ready for next week. Daya took to the pitch with a strong squad of seventeen players on a cold, wet and grey March morning! Very unusual for this part of Spain, but a welcome change for many of us ex pats who are more familiar with the driving wind and rain, so no excuses.

Daya started with Cooper in goal, right back Ray Jones, Siyadat and Burns, a.k.a Quemar, at centre back with Piotr Skwierz at left back. Midfield saw Houlihan return on the right hand side with Fowler on the left with Brennecke, Dean Richards and Rob Baker starting in the middle. Jamie Richards would start as the lone striker in the absence of Eddie Taylor who is taking on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro this week. We wish Eddie and his mates all the best as they try to reach the summit for a fantastic charitable cause. https://www.justgiving.com/page/paul-jamieson-2?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=WA
We are sure he'll make it and do the team proud! The early exchanges saw Daya play the ball around well at times without really penetrating the away sides' defence. As the game approached the twenty minute mark both sides had failed to test either goalkeeper as both were restricted to long range efforts. Houlihan was played in by a lovely through ball by Baker and his first time cross was narrowly missed by the on rushing Jamie Richards with the defender clearing for a corner which was subsequently cleared. This was the only real chance the home side created before they unfortunately fell a goal behind. With very little threat and danger, the home side gave away possession just inside the box with the Aspe attacker still having a lot to do. He skillfully took the ball into the box around the defenders to slot home from close range to make it 0-1 to the away side. The goal was disappointing, but there was plenty of time left for Daya to get back into the game.

Aspe started to play some nice football around the midfield area but goal number 2 was a poor goal for the home side to concede. From a corner the Aspe defender was allowed to head home unchallenged at the back post to make it 0-2, with Daya now facing a mountain to climb. Although, in truth, Daya hadn't done enough to be in front, a 0-2 scoreline was flattering for the away side. How many times have we said this, this season? At this level, good teams capitalise on your mistakes, and yet again Daya were punished. To rub salt into the wounds, Aspe won a free kick some twenty yards out just before the half time whistle. A superbly struck effort found its way into Cooper's top right hand corner of the net with no chance for the stranded keeper. 0-3 at half time looked like game over, and a deflated team were stunned into silence in the dressing room. With the game effectively over, Daya made some changes with Jones coming off at right back, Fowler on the left and Houlihan on the right. Daya changed formation putting two up front with Gallardo coming on to partner Jamie Richards. New signing Nuttall came in on the right of midfield, Dieguinho went to left midfield and Gary White came on in the middle. Captain Baker moved back to his more familiar centre half role hoping the change in formation could yield some success.

The early stages of the second half saw the away side slow down possession and hold on to what they had. Siyadat, a.k.a The Persian Pele, took a pop from twenty yards out firing the first real shot on target of the game for Daya. At that point Daya were just hoping to score a goal and restore some pride. Not long after, Daya started to gain some confidence and play some neat, attractive football. New boy Nuttall was looking threatening on the right and kept it simple, but effective, passing and moving. Brennecke, White and Dean Richards were getting on the ball and releasing Jamie Richards when possible down the right hand side. After some good play, Richards found himself taken out in the box to win a penalty around the 65 minute mark. He confidently slotted home low to the goalkeepers left to make it 1-3. The home side were invigorated by the goal and soon after earned another penalty with the goalkeeper taking out Gallardo. Jamie Richards stepped up again to slot his penalty high down the centre of the goal leaving the keeper with no chance. With the score now 2-3, the home side sensed blood. Richards and Gallardo looked a real threat going forward with the Aspe defence unable to cope with their speed and directness. With less than twenty minutes remaining, Daya won a free kick from all of 25 yards out. Gallardo struck the ball beautifully, hard and low to the goalkeepers left and beyond his despairing dive. The sound and sight of the ball hitting the back of the net was music to the whole squads ears with jubilant celebrations. 3-3 and it was now game on! Who would have saw this coming at half time? Whatever would happen from now until the final whistle would be irrelevant, this was a superb display of fight, spirit and determination, mixed with quality. The away side had the game won and would now need to step up a gear if they were to make their way back up north of the province with anything.

In the midst of the jubilation some calm heads were needed. Richards and Gallardo always looked a threat, but Daya's problem has been conceding goals. Sure enough, from a disputed cross, which looked out of play, it found its way to an onrushing Aspe attacker to make it 3-4 to the away side with fifteen minutes remaining. Not long after the goal the game looked dead and buried for Daya when Aspe scored number 5, to make it 3-5 to the away side with just over ten minutes remaining. Dean Richards made way for Paul Bishop with Jacob Sharratt replacing Piotr Skwierz and Ray Jones coming on for Dieguinho who was now on a yellow card but who impressed during the second half. Daya had nothing left to lose as they pushed on for a goal to make the last minutes interesting. Jamie Richards was posing huge problems to the away sides' defence and when he was released down the right again he composed himself to find the on rushing Gallardo to stroke home to make it 4-5. What a game this was proving to be and what a comeback was on the cards for Daya! Soon after, from a long throw in, it looked like Daya had equalised when Jamie Richards stroked home capitalising on a mistake from the Aspe goalkeeper. The wild celebrations were cut short however with the referee harshly penalising Richards for a handball that looked like hitting his chest!

The setback didn't hold back the home side, and from another swift attack Gallardo was again set up by Richards to finish clinically to make it 5-5! A sensational game now looked like going either way with Daya looking threatening each time they attacked. The goals sparked the away side into life and they won a corner with only a minute or so remaining, after some frantic defending Daya cleared their lines only for Aspe to win another corner with time running out. Fortunately for the home side they were able to clear the danger and the referee's whistle signalled the end of a spectacular game, especially in the second half with seven goals shared by both teams. For Daya Nueva they will be delighted to fight back and gain a point after all was lost after sixty minutes. At 0-3 down, against quality opposition, it looked like game, set and match. This Daya team however, has real spirit, character and fight among its squad. Despite the satisfaction of the comeback there is still disappointment that Daya didn't win all three points! Despite being three goals down at half time the boys still played well. Two errors and one quality set piece the difference between the two sides in the first half. Still, the second half formation change, particularly up front, changed the game completely. Every single player worked hard today and the whole squad deserved their post match drinks! With new signings still to join us, and more returning from injury, the future is bright for this team despite a tough start to 2025! Already Daya are one point ahead of their total points tally for the whole of last season, and would you believe today was the team's first ever draw in over a year and a half of league action!

The boys will still be disappointed conceding five goals at home, but going forward, to score five goals against a quality opposition isn't to be ignored! Gallardo with a hat trick, and Jamie Richards with two goals, fantastic achievements in such a tough league. With a squad now of over 30 players, the sky is the limit for this team. When we get a coach and assistant to shape this great bunch of men together, we are sure there is a team there which will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years. With a little bit more confidence in each other and our abilities, this squad can only improve. For now, each and everyone involved today should be proud of their efforts. No red cards, players coming back from injury, new signings settling in well and five goals scored is certainly a positive. We move on to next weeks fixture away to Atletico Orihuela full of determination and optimism. On an unusual grey, dark, morning here on the Vega Baja, the forecast is for brighter days for Daya Nueva Veteranos, just when it looked like another dark day for the club they turned the tide with a comeback which will be looked back upon with pride. A day at La Puebla always guarantees goals, today was no different! Ten goals shared by both sides, certainly not a boring day at the office! Up The Daya! 💛🖤

Informe del Partido
LFVA Jornada 12
Daya Nueva Veteranos vs Aspe U.D. Veteranos

¡Vamos Daya!

As one of the many cystic fibrosis patients around the globe, I think we can all commonly agree that medication and treatments have generally come a long way in the last thirty years or so. Especially for patients in nations who provide them with affordable access to healthcare.
As I get older, and my body changes, it’s time to ask the question? Are my medications doing more harm than good? What really am I putting into my body and can the right prescription be the wrong prescription?
