🥾 HOW TO CALCULATE DISTANCE & ELEVATION ON A HIKE? ⛰️

Many hikers focus only on the number of kilometers shown on the map. In reality, distance alone tells only part of the story.

In the mountains, three factors determine how demanding a route will be:

📍 Distance (km) — the total length of the trail.

📈 Elevation Gain (D+) — the sum of all ascents throughout the route.

📉 Elevation Loss (D−) — the sum of all descents, which can be just as physically demanding as climbing.

• A route with moderate distance can still be challenging if it includes significant elevation gain and loss.

⏱ Estimating Hiking Time

A simple rule of thumb:
🚶 4–5 km/h on easy terrain
⛰️ Add approximately 1 hour for every 300–400 m of D+

This provides a realistic estimate of the effort required before heading into the mountains.

Quick Difficulty Guide:
🟢 Easy: less than 300 m D+
🟡 Moderate: 300–800 m D+
🟠 Challenging: 800–1,200 m D+
🔴 Demanding: more than 1,200 m D+

⚠️ Remember — Distance alone never reflects the true difficulty of a hike.

Always consider:
✔ Distance
✔ Elevation Gain (D+)
✔ Elevation Loss (D−)
✔ Terrain type
✔ Weather conditions
✔ Your fitness level

Good planning helps you manage your energy, stay safe, and enjoy the experience.

🏕️ ESSENTIAL CAMPING GEAR CHECKLIST ⛰️

Heading into the wild without the right equipment quickly turns a trip into a problem.
Regardless of the type of route — multi-day hikes, mountain traverses, or overnight stays in nature — your gear defines both comfort and safety.

Here’s a core camping gear list for multi-day outdoor trips with :

🎒 Backpack
⛺ Tent / tarp / bivy system
🛏 Sleeping bag + sleeping pad
🔥 Stove + fuel system
💧 Water bottles + filtration / purification
🍲 Lightweight food (freeze-dried meals, snacks)
🦟 Insect protection
🧭 Navigation tools (map, compass, GPS)
🩹 First aid kit
🥾 Reliable hiking boots
🔦 Headlamp + compact light
🧤 Warm layers for cold nights

Core principle:
less weight — more reliability — higher safety margin.

Good gear doesn’t simplify the mountains —
it expands what’s possible in them.

⚠️ Important:
Free camping is restricted or prohibited in most European countries. Always respect local laws and protected areas. Set up tents only in designated campsites, official camping zones, or places where it is explicitly allowed and safe for nature.

What is absolutely non-negotiable for you on a trip? 👇

🪨 Catalonia Beneath Your Feet: The Geology That Shapes the Landscape

Catalonia is not just mountains. It is a geological archive written in stone.

Each massif here has its own deep history, and if you read the landscape carefully, it becomes a timeline of Earth’s processes.

PYRENEES / CADÍ-MOIXERÓ
Folded sedimentary mountains formed during the Alpine orogeny.
Dominated by limestone, sandstone, marl, and conglomerate layers compressed, uplifted, and exposed through tectonic forces.

MONTSERRAT
Sedimentary conglomerate massif.
Formed from ancient Eocene alluvial fan deposits, later uplifted and heavily eroded, creating its iconic needle-like relief.

LA GARROTXA
Quaternary volcanic landscape.
Basalt flows, scoria, and tuff formed by relatively recent volcanic activity, producing more than 40 volcanic cones.

This is not a classification of “different mountain types.”
It is three distinct geological systems shaping the same region.

Mountains here are not a backdrop. They are an ongoing process written into the terrain.

Are you hiking down the mountain… or just “falling with style”? 👇

Many hikers accept knee pain as something “normal” after years in the mountains. It’s not. In most cases, it comes from poor load management on descents.

PHYSICS DOESN’T LIE:

On every downhill step, your body absorbs impact driven by mass, gravity, and—most importantly—deceleration.

WHY THE LOAD GETS SO HIGH:

If you descend with a stiff leg and strike hard on the heel, your body stops almost instantly. That sharp braking creates up to ~4g of deceleration. Add gravity (1g), and your knees can momentarily handle forces up to 5× your body weight.

• Poor technique → ~450 kg of force (for a 90 kg person)
• Proper technique + trekking poles → ~180 kg

THE CUMULATIVE EFFECT 🤯

Over a long descent (10,000+ steps), efficient movement can reduce thousands of tons of stress on your joints.

TREKKING POLES CHANGE THE GAME 🏔️

They are not just support — they are a load distribution tool.

BENEFITS:
• Reduce knee impact by 15–30% on descents
• Improve balance on loose or steep terrain
• Reduce quad fatigue (less eccentric overload)
• Increase stability under a heavy backpack

HOW TO USE THEM PROPERLY:

• Shorten poles slightly for descents
• Keep elbows around 90° when planted
• Place poles slightly ahead of your body
• Actively push through them (don’t just tap the ground)
• Use both poles together on steep sections when needed

Think of trekking poles as an extra pair of legs absorbing impact before it reaches your knees.

This is not about comfort. It’s about longevity in the mountains.

💡Hike Smarter: Simple Gear Tips That Actually Help 🛟

Mountain days are the best… until something small ruins the hike: sweaty layers, a bouncing backpack, a hot spot turning into a blister, or “it’s just a short day hike” with no headlamp.

This carousel is your quick gear checklist to stay safe + comfortable:

• Layering (base / mid / shell) the simple way
• Backpack balance (so your back doesn’t hate you)
• Foot care to prevent blisters before they start
• A tiny weather & safety kit that saves the day
• Bonus: trekking poles — setup + technique for climbs & descents

Pro tip: If you’re unsure what to pack, use the “STOP test” before leaving:

• Snacks, Thermal layer, Offline map, Power (phone + headlamp).

Comment “LIST” and we’ll send a simple day-hike packing checklist.

Save this post and share it with a hiking buddy.

HOW TO CARRY A BACKPACK
Comfort. Balance. Proper technique.

80% of hikers wear their backpack incorrectly — and pay for it with lower back pain, tight shoulders, and early fatigue.
Proper setup is the difference between enjoying the mountains and suffering through them.

Here’s what actually works:

1. HIP BELT FIRST
Carries ~70% of the load.
Position it on your hip bones — not your stomach.

2. SHOULDER STRAPS
Tighten, but don’t overdo it.
They stabilize — they are not meant to carry the weight.

3. LOAD LIFTERS
Angle ~45°.
Pull the load closer to your back to reduce lower back strain.

4. CHEST STRAP
Light tension for stability and better posture.

5. GOLDEN RULE
If the pack pulls you backward — it’s wrong.
It should move with your body, not against it.

Save this • Train smart • Protect your back
