TIMELESS MARA

Not every image works in black and white. Some lose something when colour is taken away, while others seem to find a completely different identity.

This one definitely does.

A lioness walking quietly across the open plains, passing beneath a lonely acacia, with a dramatic African sky stretching endlessly behind her. Converting the image to monochrome removes the distraction of colour and leaves only light, form, texture and emotion giving the photograph a timeless quality that feels almost as though it could have been captured decades ago.

Captured during the MAASAI MARA Photographic Safari I have just finished hosting in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

Once again, Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp was my base in the Mara, working alongside my trusted guide Elvis Rakwa, whose understanding of wildlife behaviour and positioning makes such photographic opportunities possible.

THE GOLDEN HOUR HUNT

A female cheetah pauses over her kill as the afternoon light turns the Maasai Mara into gold.

One of the advantages of photographing from Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp’s specially adapted photography vehicles is the ability to get down low. That lower perspective creates a much more intimate composition, placing the viewer at the cheetah’s level and creating a stronger connection with the subject.

Captured during the ongoing MAASAI MARA Photographic Safari, with my excellent guide and friend Elvis Rakwa.

THE FINAL ATTEMPT

Two failed attempts. Three long hours. And finally… success.

We had been watching this lioness from the Rongai Pride work a wildebeest herd, with the first two attempts ending unsuccessfully. When she finally committed again, the action erupted into chaos, dust, movement and a tangle of bodies that made it almost impossible to get a clean shot.

Then, as quickly as it had started, the dust began to settle.

That gave me just a few opportunities to capture the aftermath, and this frame is one of my favourites. I particularly like the direct eye contact with the lioness, combined with her claws gripping the wildebeest’s face. It tells the story of the struggle without needing to see the entire chase.

Getting into the right position was no easy task either. A big thank you to Elvis Rakwa at Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp, who worked incredibly hard to get us into the best possible position throughout this encounter.

Thank you, Elvis!

Captured in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, during the ongoing MAASAI MARA Photographic Safari.

Our base for this photographic expedition is Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp, with Elvis Rakwa as my guide. One of the reasons I keep coming back to the Mara with photographers of all levels.

NECK TO NECK IN THE MARA

What may look like an affectionate embrace is actually “necking” . . . A behaviour in which male giraffes swing and strike their necks against one another in a test of strength and dominance. It can look surprisingly violent, but it’s a fascinating part of giraffe behaviour and social dynamics.

Captured during my ongoing MAASAI MARA Photographic Safari in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, with Elvis Rakwa, my trusted guide at Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp.

These are exactly the unexpected wildlife encounters that make every game drive in the Mara so rewarding.

WALKING WITH GIANTS

There are sightings that remind you exactly why you keep coming back to the Maasai Mara.

This lioness casually walking across the plains, with a herd of elephants moving behind her, was one of those wonderfully unexpected encounters. The scale, the juxtaposition and the complete lack of concern from either species made for a very special scene.

Captured during my MAASAI MARA Photographic Safari, which is once again producing some incredible sightings. This is exactly why I keep returning to the Mara with photographers of all levels . . . from those just beginning their wildlife photography journey to experienced shooters. You simply never know what the next game drive will deliver.

Our base for this photographic expedition is Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp, where I am once again working with the excellent photographic guide Elvis Rakwa. Having a guide who understands photography, positioning and light makes such a difference when these opportunities present themselves.

THE LAST LIGHT

Sometimes you need to get creative to turn a fleeting moment into the image you have in mind.

A lioness from the Topi Pride, locked on another member of the Pride as the last light of the day ignited the sky behind her. At this point, the light was fading fast, so I pushed the ISO to maintain the highest possible shutter speed and captured five frames, waiting for those brief moments when she remained perfectly still. The five exposures were later blended into this final image.

The real challenge? Getting all five frames while the lioness stayed motionless enough for the blend to work.

Wildlife photography isn’t always about simply pressing the shutter at the right moment. Sometimes it is about adapting, experimenting and finding a creative solution when the light and conditions aren’t quite on your side.

Captured during my still-ongoing MAASAI MARA Photographic Safari in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

Our base is Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp, my chosen camp in the Mara for photographic safaris, with Elvis Rakwa being the man who consistently gets us into position for these special encounters.

THE RIVER EXPLODES

There are few wildlife spectacles as raw and unpredictable as a Mara River crossing.

In close-up and slow motion, the drama becomes even more intense . . . the hesitation, the panic, the sheer power of hundreds of wildebeest fighting the current as they scramble for the opposite bank. Every crossing is different, and every second can change the outcome.

Captured during the peak of the Great Migration while hosting my ongoing MAASAI MARA Photographic Safari in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

My base in the Mara is Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp, chosen specifically for its exceptional photography-trained guides. Once again, I’m teaming up with Elvis Rakwa, whose knowledge of the Mara and understanding of wildlife photography make an incredible difference when these moments unfold.

THE LONE WANDERER

A lone wildebeest crossing the endless plains of the Maasai Mara, silhouetted against an iconic African sunset as the last light settles behind the Rift Escarpment.

Sometimes, the most powerful wildlife moments are the simplest ones a single animal, an immense landscape, and the extraordinary light of the Mara.

Captured while hosting my ongoing MAASAI MARA Photographic Safari, based at Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp, with our excellent guide Elvis Rakwa .

At first glance, it’s simply a leopard resting in a tree with a kill. But look a little closer… the kill is an elephant calf.

This is Luluka, a female leopard of the Maasai Mara, and seeing a leopard with an elephant calf in a tree is something unique. As far as we could establish, the calf may have been stillborn or died shortly after birth, although the exact circumstances remain unclear.

Whatever the circumstances, the sighting was extraordinary and a first for me after many years of photographing wildlife in Africa.

This remarkable encounter happened during the ongoing MAASAI MARA Photographic Safari, with my group perfectly positioned by my guide Elvis Rakwa, whose expert guiding made all the difference in getting the shot.

Our base for this photographic expedition is Oltepesi Tented Safari Camp, ideally located for exploring the Mara and its incredible wildlife.
