Here in Spain, we don’t just have one breakfast—we have two!

Recently I shared a bit about the first meal of the day here in Spain
now let’s talk about the second breakfast!

Every morning (usually around 10–11 a.m.), it’s not uncommon for Spaniards to take a break and head to a nearby cafe to have a quick mid-morning bite and a cup of coffee. If you’re visiting, do as the locals do and have two lighter meals in the morning. It’s a great way to get used to the famously late eating schedule here in Spain—you’ll need something to hold you over until that 2 p.m. lunch!

So what do Spanish people eat for second breakfast? This is prime tostada time—toasted bread with several varieties of toppings. My personal favorite is olive oil, crushed tomato, and Iberian ham, but butter and jam is another popular combo! Other popular second breakfast options include Spanish muffins (magdalenas), croissants, or a pincho de tortilla, and of course, don’t forget the coffee.

What’s your favorite Spanish breakfast food (for either first or second breakfast!)? Or what questions do you have about Spanish mealtimes? Let me know in the comments! 👇

If you’ve never thought about frying eggplants and drizzling them in honey or molasses, now is the time to do so 😍

Known as berenjenas fritas con miel in Spanish, this pleasantly surprising sweet-and-savory dish is a popular tapa in the south of Spain. This is such a great crowd pleaser for a summer tapas party, and so easy to make—just chop, soak, and fry the eggplant, and finish it off with a generous drizzle of honey or molasses!

Check out the recipe and be sure to tag me if you make it!

Did you know there’s no such thing as “kid food” here in Spain? đŸ€”

You won’t find many kids’ menus here—instead, kids in Spain usually eat whatever their parents are eating. Sometimes that means something simple and noticeably kid-friendly like a plate of croquettes, but not always! Spanish children eat hearty stews, seafood dishes, vegetables...you name it.

But if you want to start incorporating some Spanish recipes into your own family’s meal rotation, no need to worry about whipping up an entire cocido madrileño. Here are a handful of easy and delicious kid-approved Spanish dishes—all recipes are on the blog!

-Croquettes: crispy, creamy, and perfect for little hands!
-Tortilla de patatas: eggs and potatoes are almost always a safe bet, even for picky eaters
-Tuna pasta: a great family meal for busy weeknights
-Juicy and flavorful Spanish roast chicken
-Churros and chocolate (no explanation necessary!)

Fellow parents, I’d love to hear from you! What has surprised (or challenged!) you about eating out in new destinations with little ones?

The BEST paella valenciana recipe! đŸ„˜đŸ„˜

This was a challenging (in a fun way!) recipe to develop—here in Spain there’s so much controversy surrounding what is and what is not a paella! And despite the popular image of seafood paellas that come to mind when many people think of Spanish food, this meat-and-veggies recipe is the original, traditional version from Valencia.

So with so much debate surrounding paella, what makes this one the real deal? There are a few key elements that are crucial to an authentic paella valenciana:

✅ Short-grain, round Spanish rice (I use the Senia variety) that’s able to soak up tons of flavor
✅ Water (not stock!) as a liquid
✅ Chicken and either pork ribs or rabbit as the protein (rather than seafood)
✅ Simple Spanish spices—paprika and saffron—along with plenty of excellent quality olive oil
✅ A wide, shallow pan to allow the rice to cook in a single even layer, as well as get that perfectly crispy layer of socarrat on the bottom!
