How to organize your own trip to the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴🏝️
If you are looking for Latino vibes, beautiful beaches, and a typical Caribbean holiday getaway, the Dominican Republic is the perfect pick! The best time to visit Caribbean islands is from December to March, and we chose January.
📍 Location: The Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean, sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
The two most famous spots are Punta Cana and La Romana. We stayed on Bávaro Beach in Los Corales, Punta Cana at Los Corales Beach Village. We booked an ocean view junior suite for 8 days with breakfast, costing around $1300.
We flew from Serbia — no visa required, just fill out the online e-ticket form before arrival (free, you get a QR code), which is checked at the airport.
💵 Currency: Dominican Peso (DOP) is the main currency. You can change euros or USD at exchange offices to avoid high conversion fees. Payment by card is widely accepted, but rates aren’t always the best.
💰 Prices: They are decent depending on the place, but taxes of 25–30% are added, so it can add up. Punta Cana and La Romana are the most popular and more expensive. Both areas are mostly tourist resorts and very safe, with plenty of security and police around.
During our week-long stay, we:
• Visited Saona Island and Catalina Island
• Relaxed at Macao Beach
• Took an island tour with stops in the town of Higüey (local market, cathedral), a traditional Dominican house, a cigar-rolling workshop, and a cocoa demonstration
• Spent time on Bávaro Beach (note: some seaweed, typical in season)
🚕 Getting around: Taxis and Uber work fine.
🍴 Food: Amazing variety — lots of international options, but definitely try local dishes like mangu, mofongo, rice & beans, sancocho, and fresh seafood (some of the best I've tried!)
Overall, an amazing experience! 🌴 Feel free to drop any questions in the comments if you want tips for your own trip. ❤️
