The Karrayyuu like to express themselves sartorially and use clothing and hairstyles to distinguish between rank, position, and heroism. During Gadaa celebrations, Karrayyuu men dress in different colored cloaks depending on the grades they occupy. Members of Dorii, the ruling class, wear red shawls known as Bakala, while others wear a black long coat known as Kaba, to symbolize they are in one of the Gadaa term celebrations. Men with a mirga title, which is a title given to a person who has defeated an enemy, wear a white shawl with green and red stripes. This symbolizes his recognized heroism.
Karrayyuu women adorn themselves with intricate jewelry made from coloured beads and cowries. They wear earrings known as Abbrika Gurra and necklaces with different colored beads called Xuruura. The Shaamee, which is made with blue, white, and yellow beads; the Callee Lissaa; and the Sabbataa Callee are all used for general embellishment of a woman’s outfit. Another fashion practice that is unique to the Karrayyuu is the two horizontal lines that mark the cheeks of their women, as is the Gunfura hairstyle worn by the men, both of which distinguish Karrayyuu from the other Oromo groups.
