“Meeting a hyena is a spiritual ceremony, and people believe in spiritual things. In the darkness, you only see two shiny eyes, same like cats,” says Mikiyas Belachwe, an Ethiopian man who routinely performs a face-to-face feeding practice with wild hyenas in the city of Harar. The bizarre association between spotted hyenas and Harar dates back centuries, with its mysterious beginnings obscured by myth and tradition. According to local legend, there was a long, brutal conflict between people and hyenas during a severe famine. Elders began feeding the hungry hyenas a thick, buttery porridge in an effort to dissuade them from raiding the city.
