The celebrations extend over three magical days, harmonizing beautifully with the monthly feast of St. Michael, Ethiopia's beloved archangel.

During this special time, we witness enchanting processions across the nation—from the vibrant streets of Addis Ababa to the sacred grounds of Lalibela and the historical beauty of Gondar. Participants, adorned in stunning white traditional attire, gather to partake in this momentous occasion, radiating joy and renewal.

The eve of Timket, known as Ketera, is marked by exhilarating festivities as revelers and clergy carry the sacred Tabots (replicas of the Ark of the Covenant) to nearby water bodies. Happy Ethiopian New Year – 2017 ፳፻፲፯ September 11, 2024

The Ethiopian New Year is called Kidus Yohannes in Ge'ez and Tigrinya, while in Amharic, it is called Enkutatash meaning "gift of jewels". Ethiopia will be celebrating it’s New Year entering the Ethiopian Calendar year of 2017 this September 11th, 2024 G.C (entering its first month, Meskerem, in Amharic.). The New Year coincides with spring; blossoms are exploding all over the cities, the rainy season is coming to an end and there is more sunshine. What a way to start the New Year! The celebrations will be colorful and jam-packed with Ethiopian cultural expressions and traditional wear engulfing the streets and neighborhoods.

“Abebayehush” is sung by young girls and women, while the boys draw pictures of the saints and go door to door in the morning giving blessings and receiving small coins and birr from households. Traditionally, they would carry bouquets of freshly picked flowers symbolizing the coming of spring.

Ethiopia is 7 years and eight months behind the Gregorian calendar and has 13 months. All 12 months are 30 days each and the 13th, Pagumene, is comprised of the remaining 5 days (or 6 on a leap year). This year is a leap year and Pagumene will be a 6-day month starting 6th September and ending on September 11th.
