Christmas in Ethiopia, known as "Genna," is celebrated on January 7th, according to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church's calendar. It is a deeply religious holiday marked by church services, fasting, and feasts. Many Ethiopians attend church for a midnight mass, where they celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with prayers, hymns, and religious rituals. The holiday is preceded by a 43-day fasting period during which many people abstain from eating animal products. On Christmas Day, families gather for a festive meal that often includes dishes like "doro wat" (spicy chicken stew) and "injera" (a type of flatbread). The celebration is characterized by joy, community, and spiritual reflection.

Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela
“I doubt whether any one believes if I write more about the Rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Even readers will say what I have said so far is not true. But I swear in the name of the Almighty God that what I have written is all true. Even it is possible to say more than this. However, I hope I will not be called a liar.”
This is an excerpt taken from what the Portuguese clergy and historian, Francisco Alvarez, wrote after his first and wondrous visit of the Rock-hewn churches of Lalibela as part of his 6 year visit to the northern part of Ethiopia since 1520/1521.

The Rock–hewn churches of Lalibela, whose story is written by the fascinated Alvarez hundreds of years before, are found in Lalibela town which is located 180 kilometers north- west of Woldya. Writing about these churches is indeed difficult as putting that unbelievably complex, fascinating creative artistic work into words is not as easy as personally seeing it.
