Timket is one of the primary public festivals celebrated by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The festival commemorates the baptism of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. The celebration is a three-day event, with a colorful religious and cultural practices.

On the eve, known as Ketera, the Tabots, which are the sacred replicas of the Ark of the Covenant, are taken out of the churches. They are escorted to a nearby river or a designated pool of water amidst great cheering and hymns. This signifies Jesus Christ’s journey to the Jordan river. The Tabots stay overnight in specially prepared tents, where the night is spent in prayer, hymns, and the Divine Liturgy.

On the day of the feast, prayers are conducted at the baptismal site starting from the morning. The blessed water is then sprinkled upon the gathered people. Following extensive performances of Wereb and spiritual songs by priests, deacons, and choirs, the Tabots are escorted back to their respective churches by the massive crowd that accompanied them. The following day marks the feast of Kana Ze Galila (the Wedding at Cana), during which the Tabot of St. Michael, which remained at the site, is escorted back to its church.

Timket is one of the main festivals for which Ethiopia is known worldwide. Six years ago, it was inscribed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

#ጥምቀት
የጥምቀት በዓል በኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋህዶ ቤተክርስትያን በአደባባይ ከሚከበሩ በዓላት መካከል አንዱና ዋናው ነው። በዓሉ ጌታችን መድሀኒታችን ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ በሰላሳ አመቱ በዮርዳኖስ ወንዝ በዮሐንስ መጠመቁን፣ መንፈስ ቅዱስ ከሰማይ በርሱ ላይ የመውረዱን ነገር የምታከብርበት በዓል ነው።

በዓሉ ከዋዜማው እለት ጀምሮ ለሶስት ተከታታይ ቀናት የሚከበር ልዮ በዓል ነው። በበዓሉ ዋዜማ በከተራ እለት ታቦታት ከቤተክርስትያናት ወጥተው ህዝቡን እየባረኩ በአቅራቢያቸው ወዳለው ወንዝ ወይም የተገደበ ውሀ በትልቅ እልልታና ዝማሬ ታጅበው የሄዳሉ። ይህም ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ ወድ ዮርዳኖስ መሄዱን ለማመልከት ነው። በዚያም በተዘጋጀላቸው የታቦት ማደሪያ ሆነው ሌሊቱን በዝማሬ እና በቅዳሴ ያሳልፋሉ።

በበዓሉ እለትም ከጠዋት አንስቶ በባህረ ጥምቀቱ ጸሎት ይደረጋል። የተጸለየበት ውሀም በዚያ በተሰበሰበው ምዕመን ላይ ለቡራኬ ይረጫል። ከዚያም በቀሳውስትና፣ ካህናት እና መዘምራን ወረብና ዝማሬዎች በሰፊው ከቀረቡ በኋላ ታቦታቱ ይዟቸው በመጣው ህዝብ ታጅበው ወደየአብያተክርስትያናቱ ይመለሳሉ። በማግስቱም የቃና ዘገሊላ በዓል የሚታሰብ ሲሆን፣ በማደሪያ የቀረው የቅዲስ ሚካኤል ታቦት ወደቤተክርስትያኑ ይሸኛል።

የጥምቀት በዓል ኢትዮጵያ በመላው አለም ከምትታወቅባቸው በዓላት ዋነኛው ሲሆን ከስድስት አመታት በፊት በአለም አቀፉ የትምህርት፣ የባህልና፣ የሳይንስ ተቋም ዮኔስኮ አማካኝነት በማይዳሰሱ ቅርሶች ስር ተመዝግቧል።

Today, Ethiopians are celebrating Genna, the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the holiday is observed starting from the eve with liturgical services, Woreb, and Mahlet. In terms of cultural traditions, particularly in rural Ethiopia, the season is characterized by vibrant traditional games such as Genna Chewata, a field hockey-like game, and Yeferes Gugs, traditional horse racing.

The Beza Lekulu Woreb ceremony held in Lalibela is a unique highlight of the celebration. What makes the ritual so beautiful is the performance by priests and deacons atop the "Mame" height between Bete Medhane Alem and Bete Mariam. They chant the Woreb responsively from above and below, symbolizing the heavenly angels and earthly shepherds joining together to praise the birth of the Lord. In addition to the Nativity of Christ, the day also commemorates the birth of Saint and King Lalibela. Thousands of international tourists travel to Debre Roha to witness this stunning religious ceremony. Furthermore, another highlight of the holiday is the A'elafat Zimare program, where Orthodox believers gather in public squares to celebrate the eve of the Nativity through collective hymns.

The reason Ethiopia celebrates Christmas on January 7 (Tahesas 29), unlike much of the rest of the world, is due to its unique calendar system. In addition to Ethiopians, Oriental and Eastern Orthodox churches in the Middle East, Russia, and Eastern Europe that follow the Julian Calendar also celebrate the birth of our Lord today, Tahsas 29.

ዛሬ በኢትዮጵያውያን ዘንድ የጌታችን የመድሀኒታችን የኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ የልደት በዓል ገና እየተከበረ ነው። በዓሉ በተለይም በኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋህዶ ቤተክርስትያን ከዋዜማው አንስቶ በቅዳሴ፣ በወረብ፣ እና በማህሌት ይከበራል። በባህላዊ እሴቱም የገና በዓል በገጠሩ የኢትዮጵያ ክፍል በገና ጨዋታ እንዲሁም በፈረስ ጉግስ የባህላዊ ጨዋታዎች ደምቆ ሲከበር የሚከርም በዓል ነው።

በላሊበላ የሚካሄደው የቤዛ ለኩሉ የወረብ ስርዓት ደግሞ የበዓሉ ልዩ መልክ ነው። የቤዛ ኩሉን ስርዓት ውብ እና ልዩ የሚያረገው ካህናትና ቀሳውስት በቤተ መድሀኔአለም እና በቤተ ማርያም መሀል በሚገኘው ማሜ ጋራ ሆነው ከላይ እና ከታች እየተቀባበሉ የሚያካሂዱት የወረብ ስርዓት ሲሆን፣ ምሳሌነቱም የጌታችንን ልደት ከሰማይ መላእክት ከምድር እርኞች እየተቀባበሉ ማመስገናቸውን የሚያሳይ ነው። በእለቱ ከጌታችን ልደት በተጨማሪ የቅዱስ ላሊበላ የልደት በዓል የሚታሰብበት ነው።ይህን አስደማሚ ሀይማኖታዊ ስር ዓት ለመታደም በሺዎች የሚቆጠሩ የውጪ ሀገር ቱሪስቶች ወደ ደብረ ሮሀ ይተማሉ። ከዚህም በተጨማሪ የገና በዓል ሌላ ድምቀት በሆነው የአእላፋት ዝማሬ መርሀ ግብር ኦርቶዶክሳውያን በአደባባይ በመሰባሰብ በዝማሬ የልደቱን ዋዜማ አክብረዋል።

ሀገራችን ኢትዮጵያ ከሌላው አለም በተለየ የገናን በዓል በታህሳስ 29 የማክበሯ ምስጢር የራሷ የዘመን አቆጣጠር ያላት ከመሆኑ ጋር የተያያዘ ነው። ከኢትዮጵያውያን በተጨማሪ በመካከለኛው ምስራቅ፣ በሩስያ፣ እንዲሁም በምስራቅ አውሮፓ በሚገኙ የጁሊያን ካላንደር በሚከተሉ የኦርየንታል እና የምስራቅ ኦርቶዶክስ አብያተ ክርስትያናት ዘንድ የጌታችን ልደት ዛሬ ታህሳስ 29 ይከበራል።

የኢሬቻ በዓል በቢሾፍቱ ሆረ ሀርሰዲ በድምቀት ተከብሯል። የኦሮሞ ህዝብ የምስጋና በዓል ኢሬቻ ዛሬም በሀርሰዲ ሀይቅ ዙሪያ በተሰባሰቡ በውብ የባህል አልባሳት ባጌጡ ታዳሚዎች ደምቆ ተከብሯል። ኢትዮጵያ በዩኔስኮ የአለም ቅርስነት ልታስመዘግባቸው እየሰራችባቸው ካሉ የማይዳሰሱ ቅርሶች መካከል አንዱ ነው። የኢሬቻ በዓል የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ድምቀት፣ የኢትዮጵያ የባህል ባለፀጋነት ማሳያ ነው።

የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ትልቁ የምስጋና በዓል ኢሬቻ ዛሬ በአዲስ አበባ ሆረ ፊንፊኔ ተከብሯል። የኢሬቻ በዓል የኦሮሞ ህዝብ እንደባህሉ እንደወጉ የክረምቱን ወራት፣ የጨለማውን ጊዜ በሰላም ላሸጋገረው፣ ሰማዩን ለገለጠው፣ ምድርን በአበባ ላስዋበው፣ የወንዙን ሙላት ላጎደለው፣ አመትን ላቀዳጀው አንድ ፈጣሪ (ዋቃ) ምስጋናውን በወንዝ ዳርቻ ለምለም ቄጤማ ይዞ የሚያቀርብበት በዓል ነው። በዓሉ በሆረ ፊንፊኔ አባ ገዳዎች፣ ሀዳ ሲንቄዎች እንዲሁም በሺዎች የሚቆጠሩ ታዳሚዎች በተገኙበት ንጋት ላይ በድምቀት ተከብሯል።

The grand thanksgiving festival of the Oromo people, Irreecha, has been celebrated today in Addis Ababa, Hora Finfinne. Irreecha is a cultural festival of the Oromo people, held to give thanks to Waqa (God), for safely bringing them from the dark, rainy season into a time of light and abundance. During the festival, people express gratitude by the riverside, carrying green grass and flowers.This year’s celebration at Hora Finfinne was held early in the morning, attended by Abba Gadas, Hada Sinqees, and thousands of participants who gathered in unison to mark the occasion.

በኢትዮጵያ መስቀልን እንደጉራጌ ማን ያከብራል?

መስቀል በጉራጌ የበዓሎች ሁሉ ንጉስ ነው።

አመቱን በሙሉ በጉጉት የሚጠበቅ፣ እጅግ በተለየ ባህላዊ ክንውን የሚከበር ትልቅ በዓል ነው። ስራ ወዳዶቹ ጉራጌዎች ወደ ትውልድ ቀያቸው የሚሰባሰቡበት በመስቀል በዓል ነው። ለመስቀል ዝግጅት የሚጀምሩት ወራትን ቀደም ብለው ነው። በዓሉም ከአዲስ አመት ቀጥሎ ባሉት ሳምንታት ቀናት እየተሰየሙ በተለያየ ባህላዊ ክንውን ሲከበር ይከርማል።

ለምሳሌ ያህል ብንጠቅስ መስከረም 13 የጎመን ክትፎ የሚበላበት ቀን ነው። መስከረም 15 ወኸምያ ወይም የእርድ ቀን ሲሆን፣ አመቱን በሙሉ ሲቀለብ የቆየ ሰንጋ በየአባወራው ቤት ታርዶ ክትፎ የሚበላበት እለት ነው። መስከረም 16 በብዙ አካባቢዎች እንደተለመደው ደመራ የሚበራበት እለት ሲሆን ከመስከረም 17 በኋላ ያሉት ቀናት ደግሞ አማቾች የሚጠያየቁበት እለታት ናቸው።

ይህ የጉራጌ ልዩ ባህላዊ ስርዓት በሀገራችን ዝናው እጅግ የናኘ ነው። የመስቀል በዓልን በጉራጌ ለማክበር የሚሄዱ የሀገር ውስጥ ጎብኚዎች ቁጥር ከአመት አመት እጅግ እየጨመረ መጥቷል። በባህል መወራረስም ክትፎን በመስቀል መብላት እጅግ የተለመደ ክንውን ነው።



Who celebrates Meskel more than the Gurage?

Among the Gurage people, Meskel is the greatest feast of the year, eagerly awaited and celebrated with unique cultural practices. It is during this festival that the Gurage people return to their homes and gather with their families and communities. Preparations for the celebration begin months in advance. The festival takes place in the weeks following the Ethiopian New Year and is marked by a series of distinctive traditional events.

For example, on Meskerem 13, it is customary to eat gomen kitfo. On Meskerem 15, known as Wohamyia or families eat kitfo, made from beef that has been fed throughout the year and kept for this day. On Meskerem 16, as in many other parts of Ethiopia, the Demera bonfire is lit. The days that follow, beginning from Meskerem 17, are times when relatives and in-laws exchange visits and strengthen social bonds.

This distinctive Gurage tradition is renowned throughout Ethiopia. The number of local visitors who travel to Gurage to celebrate Meskel is increasing yearly. It is also a well-established cultural practice to eat kitfo during the Meskel season, which has become a defining feature of the celebration.

#ታሪክ
በኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋህዶ ቤተክርስትያን አስተምህሮ መሰረት የጌታችን የመድሀኒታችን የኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ መስቀል 300 አመት ከተቀበረበት የተገኘበት ታሪክ ይህ ነው፡

ጌታችን መድሀኒታችን ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ የተሰቀለበትን መስቀል ህሙማን ሲድኑበት የተመለከቱ አይሁድ ከቆሻሻ ማጠራቀሚያ ወስደው ጣሉት። ክርስትያኖች ለማውጣት ቢፈልጉም በጊዜው አስጨንቀው ሲገዙ በነበሩ የሮማ ገዢዎች እና በአይሁድ ከልካይነት መስቀሉ ሳይወጣ፣ ለዘመናት ቆሻሻ እየተከመረበት ለሶስት መቶ አመታት ተዳፍኖ ቀረ።

የታላቋ ሮም ገዢ የቁስጠንጢኖስ እናት የሆነችው ንግስት እሌኒ በራሷ ተነሳሽነት መስቀሉን ለማግኘት ወደ ኢየሩሳሌም ተጓዘች። ኪሪያኮስ በተባለ አረጋዊ እርዳታ ደመራ አስደምራ፣ እጣን አስጢሳ ጢሱ መስቀሉ ወደተቀበረበት ተራራ ጠቆማት። ቁፈራውን ሳትውል ሳታድር መስከረም 17 አስጀምራ ከሰባት ወራት በኋላ መጋቢት 10 መስቀሉ ተገኘ።

በሀገራችን ኢትዮጵያ ይህ ታላቅ የመስቀል በዓል በዋዜማው ደመራን በመደመር፣ ችቦ በማብራት ፣ በቤተክርስትያን በማህሌት እና ቅዳሴ ይከበራል። በውጭ ሀገር ቱሪስቶች እጅግ የሚወደድ እና በስፋት የሚጎበኝ፣ ኢትዮጵያ በመላው አለም የምትታወቅበት ትልቅ የሀገራችን ምልክት ነው። የመስቀል በዓል ሀገራችን ኢትዮጵያ በዩኔስኮ ካስመዘገበቻቸው የማይዳሰሱ ቅርሶች ውስጥ አንዱ ነው።


According to the traditions of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church, this is the history of the discovery of the True Cross:

The Cross on which our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was crucified, was thrown into a garbage dump by the Jews, who witnessed the sick being healed by its power. Although Christians desired to find the true cross, they couldn't do so due to the persecution they faced rom the Roman rulers and the hostility of the Jews. The cross remained buried for more than three hundred years.

In 335 AD, Queen Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, undertook a journey to Jerusalem with the initiative of finding the Holy Cross. With the help of an old man named Kyriakos, she lit a big bonfire and burned incense, and the smoke pointed toward the hill where the True Cross had been buried. Beginning the excavation on Meskerem 17 (September 27), after seven months of digging, the Cross was discovered on Megabit 10 (March 19).

In Ethiopia, this great celebration of the finding of the True cross or Meskel is celebrated with the lighting of the Demera bonfire, the burning of torches (Chibo), as well as hymns (Mahlet) and liturgy (Kidase) in the churches. It is a festival much loved by foreign tourists and widely attended, making it one of the great symbols through which Ethiopia is known around the world. Meskel celebration is also one of Ethiopia’s immaterial heritages inscribed by UNESCO.

መስከረም 16 እና 17 በኢትዮጵያ እጅግ ትልቅ ክብር ያላቸው ቀናት ናቸው። የኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ቤተክርስቲያን እለታቱን የጌታችን የመድሀኒታችን ኢየሱስ ክርስቶስ መስቀል ለሶስት መቶ አመታት ተቀብሮ ቆይቶ፣ በንግስት እሌኒ የመገኘቱን ነገር በማስታወስ ታከብረዋለች። ሮማዊቷ ንግስት እሌኒ መስቀሉን ለማግኘት በካህናት እየተረዳች ደመራ አስደምራ፣ የደመራውም ጭስ መስቀሉ ወደተቀበረበት ትክክለኛ ተራራ እንደጠቆማት የቤተክርስትያኗ ድርሳናት እንዲሁም የተለያዩ የታሪክ መዛግብት ያስረዳሉ። ይንንም በማሰብ በዋዜማው አመሻሽ ላይ በየቤተክርስትያኑ እና በየአድባሩ ደመራ ተደምሮ፣ በዙሪያው ምዕመናን ተሰባስበው ደመራውን እያቀጣጠሉ የጌታችን መስቀል መገኘቱን በዝማሬ እና በምስጋና ያከብራሉ።

በዓሉ በተለይም በአዲስ አበባ መስቀል አደባባይ እጅግ ለየት ባለ ድምቀት ይከበራል። በመስቀል አደባባይ በመላው ሀገሪቱ በግዝፈቱ ተወዳዳሪ የሌለው ደመራ ተደምሮ፣ የኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋህዶ ቤተክርስቲያን ፓትሪያርክ በተገኙበት፣ እጅግ ባማረ የቀሳውስት እና ሰንበት ተማሪዎች ትርዒት፣ በብዙ ሺህ ምዕመናን ታጅቦ ይከበራል። በዓሉ ሀገራችን ኢትዮጵያ በዩኔስኮ የአለም ቅርስነት ካስመዘገበቻቸው የማይዳሰሱ ቅርሶች መካከል አንዱ ነው።



Meskel and Demera, celebrated on Meskerem 16 and 17 (September 26 and 27), are days of great significance in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church commemorates these holy days in remembrance of the finding of the True Cross of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, which had been buried for three centuries and was discovered through the efforts of Queen Helena. According to church tradition and historical records, Queen Helena of Rome, guided by priests, lit a great bonfire (Demera), the smoke of which pointed to the exact hill where the Cross had been buried.In memory of this event, on the eve of the feast bonfires are lit at churches across the country, with the faithful gathering around, singing hymns and offering praise to honor the discovery of the Cross.

The festival is especially renowned in Addis Ababa, where it is celebrated with extraordinary grandeur at Meskel Square. The celebration there features the lighting of the largest Demera in the nation, attended by the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, accompanied by a beautiful procession of clergy and Sunday school students, and witnessed by tens of thousands of believers. Meskel is also inscribed by UNESCO as one of Ethiopia’s Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity.
