Visiting, returning to, investing in, or settling in Ethiopia?

One of the most common challenges people face is knowing where to go for government services, what documents to prepare, how much to pay, and how long the process may take.

MESOB can help make this easier.

MESOB, which stands for Modern Ethiopian Service for Organised Benefits, is Ethiopia’s one-stop government service platform designed to help users access information about public services in a more organized way.

Through MESOB, users can check:

✅ Which government organization provides a service
✅ What documents are required
✅ Service fees
✅ Expected processing times
✅ Whether the service is digital or requires a physical visit

MESOB can be useful for tourists, diaspora visitors, foreign residents, investors, business travelers, and Ethiopian citizens who want to understand public service requirements before visiting an office.

Some of the services available through MESOB include passport renewal, Fayda ID, work permits, tax registration, investment-related services, document-related services, and telecom solutions.

Before visiting a MESOB center, make sure to carry identification documents, take copies of key documents, confirm fees, keep payment evidence, and call 9838 if the location, service availability, or working hours are unclear.

Heading to Ethiopia soon? From the historic sites of Lalibela to the bustling streets of Addis Ababa, it’s an incredible journey, but staying healthy starts with the right preparation.

Here’s a quick guide to what you need to know about vaccines and health safety:

🌍 Yellow Fever: Is it Mandatory?

Proof of vaccination is required if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. This also applies if you’ve transited through a risk country for more than 12 hours.

🦟 Malaria: Altitude Matters

Did you know there is no malaria risk in Addis Ababa? The risk mainly exists in areas below 2,000 meters. If you’re heading to the lowlands, talk to a doctor about prevention and keep that mosquito repellent handy!

💉 Routine & Food Safety

Make sure you are up to date on routine shots like MMR and Tetanus. It is also highly recommended to get vaccinated for Hepatitis A and Typhoid, as these can spread through food and water.

🦠 COVID-19 Awareness

While rules have eased, travelers showing symptoms are still expected to wear a mask and conduct a self-test. Let’s all travel responsibly!

Losing your phone, passport, or wallet can turn a great trip into a nightmare in seconds. If you’re in Ethiopia and the unthinkable happens, stay calm and follow this Emergency Action Plan to stay safe and protected.

Here is exactly what to do, in order:

1️⃣ Get to a Safe Spot

Don't panic in the street. Move to a hotel lobby, a bank, or a mall security desk before you start making calls.

2️⃣ Block Your Accounts IMMEDIATELY

Your phone isn't just a device; it’s your bank and your identity.

📞 Ethio Telecom: Call 994 to block your SIM.
📞 Safaricom/M-PESA: Call 733 to freeze your wallet.
📞 Bank Apps: Call your bank (CBE users call 951) to stop any mobile banking access.

3️⃣ Report the Loss

Go to the nearest police station for a Police Report. You will need this official paper for your embassy, your insurance, and the airlines.

4️⃣ Contact Your Embassy

If your passport is gone, your embassy is the only place that can issue an emergency travel document. Keep a digital copy of your passport in your email, it makes this process much faster!

5️⃣ Useful Phrases to Know:
🗣️ My phone is lost: "Sil-ke tef-tob-ign-al"
🗣️ I need a police report: "Ye-po-lice re-port yas-fel-geg-nall"

Don't wait until it's too late, save these emergency numbers in your notes today!

Heading to Addis Ababa soon?

Whether you're a first-time visitor, an expat, or coming home for a visit, getting around the city is much easier than it used to be thanks to ride hailing apps!

Forget the stress of negotiating fares on the street. Here is everything you need to know to move around Addis like a local:

📱 Step 1: Get a SIM Card

Pick up a local SIM (Ethio Telecom or Safaricom) at the airport or in town. You’ll need it to register for the apps and for drivers to call you.

📍 Step 2: Think Landmarks, Not Addresses

In Addis, landmarks are everything! Instead of a street name, tell your driver you are "Near Edna Mall" or "Behind the Hilton." It saves a lot of time!

💵 Step 3: Carry Small Cash

While digital options are growing and available for Ethiopians, tourists and visitors may find it difficult to make payments using digital means. Therefore, exchange your foreign currency and keep Birr notes handy for easy payments and change.

🚗 Step 4: Download the "Big Three"

Demand fluctuates during peak hours or rainy days. Keep multiple apps like Ride, Feres, and Yango on your phone to compare prices and availability.

🛡️ Step 5: Stay Safe

Always verify the license plate and driver identity in the app before getting in. Never agree to go "off-app," as you lose your trip tracking and safety features.

A Practical Guide to Power of Attorney in Ethiopia (2026 Update)

Managing property or business from afar can be tricky, especially since Ethiopian institutions are very strict about legal representation. If you aren't physically present to sign documents, a Power of Attorney (PoA) is your most important tool.

Here is what you need to know to get it right the first time:

✅ If you are in Ethiopia: The process is now digitized through the Documents Authentication and Registration Service (DARS).

Register on the DARS online platform and select a template.

Be careful with the character limits—keep your added powers specific and concise!

Book your appointment via the Qetero app or Telebirr (a booking fee of ETB 50 applies).

Both you and your agent must go to the DARS office in person with your National IDs to finalize the process.

✅ If you are abroad: You can use the Consular route through your nearest Ethiopian Embassy (which often involves local notarization first) or use the Digital MOFA platform designed for the diaspora.

💡 Tip: Double-check that your bank or the specific government office back home accepts digital PoAs before you finish.

✅ Avoid Rejection: Most PoAs are rejected because they are too vague. Instead of saying "all matters," specify the bank account number, the exact property description, or the specific company task. Precision saves time!

Need the full, step-by-step breakdown on PoA? Read the detailed guide here: https://www.revealethiopia.com/blogs/baf02e90-0de3-4970-a163-9706583314e1

Ethiopia is known for its unique calendar, coffee culture, and rich traditions, but did you know it’s also one of Africa’s most linguistically diverse countries?

Many people think Ethiopia is “just Amharic,” but the country is home to 80+ indigenous languages 🇪🇹

Quick snapshot:

✅ Amharic: widely used in cities + federal working language
✅ Afan Oromo: largest number of native speakers
✅ Tigrigna/Tigrinya: common in the north + linked to the Ge’ez (Ethiopic) script
✅ Somali & Afar: prominent in the east
✅ English: helpful in tourist areas and major hotels

If you’re visiting Ethiopia (or just curious), understanding the language landscape makes the experience even richer.

Understanding Ethiopia’s Governance System: Federal and Regional States Explained

Ethiopia’s political system is designed to reflect its ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity. Since 1995, the country has followed a federal structure introduced by the Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE).

Under this system, regional states manage their own local affairs while remaining part of a unified national government. This approach aims to balance self-administration with cooperation at the federal level.

At the federal level, the government is based in Addis Ababa and has three main branches:

✅ The Executive – Led by the Prime Minister and supported by the Council of Ministers. The President serves mainly a ceremonial role as head of state.

✅ The Legislature – Made up of two houses: the House of Peoples’ Representatives (which enacts laws) and the House of Federation (which represents Ethiopia’s regional states and interprets the Constitution).

✅ The Judiciary – Includes the Federal Supreme Court and other federal courts responsible for interpreting laws and ensuring justice.

Ethiopia has 12 regional states and 2 chartered city administrations — Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. Each regional state has its own constitution, president, and council, and handles local matters such as education, land management, and policing.

Addis Ababa serves as the federal capital and the seat of the African Union, while Dire Dawa operates under its own city charter due to its diverse population and trade history.

Amharic is the federal working language, but each region chooses its own working language to reflect local identity and culture.

The federal government oversees national issues like defense, foreign relations, and monetary policy, while the regions focus on local governance. The House of Federation acts as a link between the two levels of government.

Understanding this structure helps explain how Ethiopia’s political system operates and how decisions are shared between national and regional authorities.

Visiting Ethiopia? 🇪🇹 Here's your friendly guide to one of our most beloved traditions: Eating with injera!

At the heart of almost every Ethiopian meal is injera, the delicious, spongy flatbread that’s both your plate and your utensil. It’s more than just food; it’s an experience of togetherness. Here’s how to enjoy it like a local!

🤝 It’s All About Sharing: Meals are served on a large communal platter, symbolizing friendship and community. Just focus on the part of the platter in front of you.

🙏 Use Your Right Hand: This is a key cultural custom. Always use your right hand to tear your injera and eat.

🤏 The Technique: Tear, Scoop, Enjoy!

Tear off a small piece of injera.

Use it to scoop up the delicious stews (wots) and vegetables.

Enjoy it all in one perfect bite!

❤️ The "Gursha": If a friend or host offers you a hand-fed bite, it’s a beautiful gesture of affection and welcome called a gursha. Accepting it is a wonderful sign of connection!
