Ethiopian Easter (Fasika) is one of the most important and spiritual celebrations in Ethiopia, observed by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ after a long period of fasting, prayer, and reflection.
Before Easter, believers go through 55 days of fasting, known as Hudade (Abiy Tsom). During this time, people avoid all animal products and often eat only one meal a day. It is a period of deep spiritual discipline, humility, and devotion.
The week leading up to Easter, called Holy Week (Suffering Week), is especially sacred. Many spend their time in church, praying and remembering the suffering of Jesus Christ.
On the night before Easter, people gather at church dressed in white, holding candles. The celebration begins at midnight with joyful prayers and hymns, symbolizing the resurrection and the victory of life over death.
After weeks of fasting, Easter Sunday becomes a time of great joy and togetherness. Families come together to share traditional meals, including doro wat (chicken stew) and injera, breaking the fast in a spirit of gratitude and celebration.
Ethiopian Easter is not only a religious holiday it is a powerful expression of faith, patience, community, and hope.
