🔰Millions Gather Across Ethiopia to Celebrate the Feast of Saint Gabriel

Millions of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church believers across Ethiopia are observing the annual feast and commemoration of Saint Gabriel (Saint Gabriel's Day), one of the most vibrant and revered religious observances in the country's liturgical calendar. Marked by night-long spiritual vigils, solemn prayers, sacred hymns, and grand processions bearing the Tabot (replica of the Ark of the Covenant), the feast honors Saint Gabriel the Archangel as a protector and miraculous intercessor. From historic cathedrals in major urban centers to rural village sanctuaries, millions of worshippers clad in traditional white netela garments gather to pray, express gratitude, offer vows in celebration of the archangel's divine protection.

The centerpiece of the nationwide commemoration remains the legendary pilgrimage to Kulbi Saint Gabriel Monastery, perched in the hills of East Hararge, which draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from every corner of Ethiopia and abroad. Following Kulbi in magnitude, the pilgrimage to Hawassa Saint Gabriel in Sidama Region attracts vast crowds of worshippers seeking blessings and fulfilling spiritual pledges. Devotees often journey hundreds of kilometers on foot, some walking the final grueling ascent carrying gifts as acts of penance and devotion, solidifying these massive gatherings as some of the largest and most profound expressions of faith and religious tourism in the Horn of Africa.

🔰UNESCO Accepts Nomination Document for Lake Tana’s World Heritage Listing

The Amhara Region Culture and Tourism Bureau announced that UNESCO has officially accepted the heritage nomination document and management plan aimed at registering Lake Tana as a World Heritage site. Bureau Public Relations Head, Mr. Abebe Embyale said that extensive work has been done to nominate Lake Tana, its historic island monasteries, and the surrounding shoreline landscape as a combined natural and cultural heritage site. Following the submission, a UNESCO evaluation team has already completed a field visit to inspect the site firsthand.

This is part of a broader regional effort to develop and promote Ethiopia's tourism assets, boost the local economy, and draft regulatory frameworks to protect these pristine environments. Bureau officials emphasize that securing an official UNESCO World Heritage status will significantly enhance international tourism, safeguard the region's ancient spiritual history, and ensure long-term sustainable socio-economic benefits for the local community.

🔰Ethiopia Set to Establish Its First-Ever UNESCO Global Geopark in the Central Rift Valley

Ethiopia is on the verge of establishing its first-ever UNESCO Global Geopark, set to become only the third of its kind in Africa. Anchored in the Silte–Butajira Tectono-Volcanic Zone within the Central Rift Valley, the proposed 3,152-square-kilometer park spans 14 districts and protects over 46 distinct geosites. Spearheaded by experts like Professor Asfawosen Asrat and tourism leaders like Sileshi Girma under the "Walk the Rift" initiative, the park features a dramatic landscape of ancient volcanoes, crater lakes, caves, and unique rift formations.

Operating as an innovative sustainable development model, the geopark will integrate geological and cultural preservation with community education and geotourism. By introducing these hidden natural wonders to the global stage, the project aims to create new socio-economic opportunities and diversify livelihoods for local communities. Advocates emphasize that safeguarding these ancient geological footprints is essential for preserving the nation's natural heritage, identity, and future sustainable development.

🔰Ethiopia's Endemic Walia Ibex Faces Extinction

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has reclassified Ethiopia’s endemic Walia Ibex as "Critically Endangered" following an alarming population collapse in its only habitat, the Simien Mountains National Park. According to Paul Scholte, senior adviser to the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority, a December 2025 census recorded just 271 individuals left in the wild, down from a peak of 865 in 2015. This drastic depletion is primarily driven by habitat degradation, expanding agricultural encroachment, and a severe spike in illegal poaching for bushmeat and traditional medicine, which was accelerated by recent regional instability.

This ecological crisis directly threatens Ethiopia’s tourism industry, as this unique species serves as the premier flagship asset of the country, drawing international eco-tourists to the Semien Mountains National Park, which is a registered UNESCO World Heritage site. A permanent collapse in its population risks stripping the park of its primary competitive edge against other East African destinations, threatening its UNESCO status, and cutting off vital revenue that supports the livelihoods of local community guides, rangers, and hospitality providers. Without these economic incentives, community led conservation efforts face a breakdown, potentially accelerating further environmental encroachment. Beyond tourism, the human encroachment and overgrazing that is endangering Walia Ibex would trigger a huge effect throughout the Afro-alphine ecosystem of the Semien mountains.
