Dallol is a striking geothermal area in northeastern Ethiopia, located in the Danakil Depression. It’s known for its vivid, otherworldly landscape of bright yellow, green, and orange mineral deposits formed by hot springs, sulfur, and salt.

Dallol is one of the hottest inhabited places on Earth, with extreme temperatures, acidic pools, and salt formations that create a surreal, almost alien-looking environment.

Palm Sunday in Ethiopia, known locally as Hosanna (or Hosaena), is a vibrant and deeply religious festival celebrated by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and other Christian denominations one week before Easter. It commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, marked by processions, traditional palm accessories, and intense devotion.

Followers wear specially crafted headbands, rings, and crosses made from palm fronds or reeds, symbolizing the branches laid before Jesus.

Many people wear traditional white robes, yabesha libs, to church ceremonies.

The faithful, including priests and children, hold palm leaves and sing "Hosanna in the highest" in Ariyam (a traditional tune).

The salt flats of the Danakil Depression are vast, blindingly white expanses of crystallized salt formed as ancient lakes evaporated under extreme heat. Located one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth, these flats are constantly reshaped by evaporation and mineral deposits.

They are also an active working landscape: Afar people traditionally cut salt blocks by hand and transport them by camel caravans across the desert—an ancient trade that still continues today.
