O you who have devoted
yourself to strife,
you have not discerned yourself
from others!
Whenever you come upon a
form,
you stop and say, “I am this.”
By God, you are not that!
How can you be that?
You are that unique one, happy,
beautiful,
and intoxicated with yourself.
You are your own bird, prey,
and snare,
your own seat of honor, carpet,
and roof.
“Substance” subsists in itself,
those things that derive from it
are accidents.
If you are born of Adam,
sit like him and behold his
progeny within yourself .
What does the vat contain
that is not in the river?
What does the room
encompass that is not in the
city?
This world is the vat, and the
heart the running stream,
this world the room, and the
heart the city of wonders.

What I want is to see your face
in a tree, in the sun coming out,
in the air.
What I want is to hear the
falcon-drum,
and light again on your forearm.
You say, "Tell him I'm not

The sound of that brusque
dismissal
becomes what I want.
To see in every palm
your elegant silver coin-
shavings,
to turn with the wheel of the
rain,

to swim like a huge fish

to be Jacob recognizing Joseph.
To be a desert mountain instead
of a city.
I'm tired of cowards.

DERVISH AT THE DOOR
A dervish knocked at a house
to ask for a piece of dry bread,
or moist, it didn't matter.
"This is not a bakery,"
said the owner.
"Might you have a bit of
gristle then?"
"Does this look like a butcher-
shop?"
"A little flour?"
"Do you hear a grinding
stone?"
"Some water?"
"This is not a well."
Whatever the dervish asked for,
the man made some tired joke
and refused to give him
anything.
Finally the dervish ran in the
house,
lifted his robe, and squatted
as tough to take a s**t.
"Hey, hey!"
"Quiet you sad man.
A deserted place
is a fine spot to relieve oneself,
and since there's no living thing
here,
or means of living, it needs
fertilizing."
The dervish began his own list
of question and answers.
"What kind of bird are you?
Not a falcon,
trained for the royal hand.
Not a peacock,
painted with everyone's eyes.
Not a parrot,
that talks for sugar cubes.
Not a nightingale,
that sings like someone in love.
Not a hoopoe bringing
messages to Solomon,
or a stork that builds on a
cliffside.
What exactly do you do?
You are no known species.
You haggle and make jokes
to keep what you own for
yourself.
You have forgotten the One
who doesn't care about
ownership,
who doesn't try to turn a profit
from every human exchange."

IGNORANCE
I didn’t know love would make
me this
crazy, with my eyes
like the river Ceyhun
carrying me in its rapids
out to sea,where every bit
of shattered boat
sinks to the bottom.(...)
I hear so many stories
and explanations, but I keep
quiet,
because I don’t know
anything,
and because something I
swallowed
in the ocean
has made me completely
content
with ignorance.
