The colorful annual girl’s festival in northern Ethiopia has different naming in various parts of the Amhara region. It’s called ashndeye in Lalibela and some parts of Gondar, Shadey in sekota, and Solel around Raya Kobo. The festival is annually celebrated by August. Girls of Ethiopian Orthodox church wander from door to door in their locality with beautiful song and dance. The name of the festival comes from the tall grass called Ashendeye by which girls put on their waist.

Suggested Itinerary – Visiting Amhara Ethiopia Travel

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar (Lake Tana)

Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.

Domestic flight to Bahir Dar (the gateway to Lake Tana).

Afternoon boat trip on Lake Tana, source of the Blue Nile, visiting 14th-century island monasteries (Ura Kidane Mihret).

Sunset at Bezawit Hill over Lake Tana.

Overnight in Bahir Dar.

Day 2: Bahir Dar – Blue Nile Falls – Gondar

Morning excursion to the Blue Nile Falls (short hike to the viewpoints).

Drive through the highlands to Gondar.

Afternoon visit to Fasil Ghebbi (Royal Enclosure) and Fasilides’ Bath.

Overnight in Gondar.

Day 3: Gondar – Simien Mountains

Drive to Debark (park headquarters).

Enter Simien Mountains National Park – one of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes.

Short hike near Sankaber with breathtaking escarpment views.

Spot endemic Gelada baboons.

Overnight: lodge or camp in the park.

Day 4: Simien Mountains – Gondar

Morning hike to Imet Gogo or drive to Chennek Camp to look for Walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf (rare).

Afternoon return to Gondar.

Overnight in Gondar.

Day 5: Gondar – Lalibela

Domestic flight to Lalibela, UNESCO World Heritage site.

Afternoon visit to the Northern Church Cluster, including the iconic Bete Medhane Alem and Bete Maryam.

Sunset at the monolithic Bete Giyorgis (St. George’s Church).

Overnight in Lalibela.

Day 6: Lalibela (full day)

Morning visit to the Southern Church Cluster.

Optional hike or mule ride to Asheton Maryam Monastery for panoramic views.

Cultural evening: enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner & music show.

Overnight in Lalibela.

Day 7: Lalibela – Addis Ababa (Departure)

Morning free for a last stroll in Lalibela.

Flight back to Addis Ababa.

Short city tour (depending on flight time): National Museum (Lucy fossil), Holy Trinity Cathedral, and souvenir shopping at Shiro Meda.

Evening traditional coffee ceremony before transfer to the airport for departure.
