A little bit about why Riitta started Arctic Escapades in the first place 😊

After 15 years of travelling and working around the world, I came back to Finland and thought it was about time I started bringing people here instead!

We’re now heading into our fourth winter, with some new trips, new dates and plenty of old favourites too. ❄️

There’s an old Finnish saying that a rowan tree, Pihlaja, won’t carry two loads in one year. 🌿

In other words, if the rowan trees are heavy with berries, winter should be less snowy ❄️

It’s a nice bit of old Finnish wisdom, and often true in south and central Finland but up here in Lapland it doesn’t quite work that way. In fact, during a temperate winter, we often end up with even more snow. 😄

So thank you, rowan.... the forecast is looking good for plenty of snow above the Arctic Circle! ❄️ 💙

CAN I JOIN WITHOUT EXPERIENCE?

We get this question frequently: Can I join if I don't know how to ski and have never been to a really cold place?

The answer is ABSOLUTELY – EVEN MORE THE REASON to join us in Lapland!

Be it a private holiday with mixed activities, Finland Arctic Challenge event, or a cross-country ski camp, none of our activities require previous skills. The point is that you'll get to experience new things, learn new skills and discover what you're capable of.

Most of our activities are essentially snow hikes, just in different forms:

🎿 BACK-COUNTRY SKIING is moving with non-technical mini-skis. They allow us to float and glide over soft, powdery snow, with poles for balance. They're excellent on most terrain, from flat to undulating fells. We use standard winter boots with these, which we can provide too.

🥾 SNOWSHOEING works on the same principle, but gives you a bit more grip. On the other hand, there's a little less flotation, so depending on the snow conditions, you may need to work a bit harder! 😀

⛷️ CROSS-COUNTRY (XC) SKIING is slightly more technical, but still very beginner-friendly. If you join our cross-country ski camp, it's zero-to-hero style. We'll teach you the basic technique, which takes a couple of hours of practice. Then we're ready to head into the National Park for daily XC ski trips.

❄️ HOW ABOUT THE COLD?

Cold turns the Arctic scenery into magic – we embrace Arctic weather. Our cabins are warm and, any time outside, whether it's -10°C / 14°F or -25°C / -13°F, we keep moving.

🧤 CLOTHING?

The key is layers, and always having a daypack with a very warm jacket to put on during breaks, plus a few other essentials.

Sweating is never ideal, so it's better to reduce layers as you get warm.

Can you get really warm in -25°C / -13°F while snowshoeing up a fell? Yep, it's guaranteed! 😄

We'll make sure everyone joining an Arctic Escapade is well briefed and prepared.
