Candela In Ice

Candela In Ice The Candela Pavilion in Ice will be built in Juuka, Finland, as a part of the master disstertation o dr. ir.-arch. Jan Belis. Also ir. Bert Van Lancker and ir.

In january-february 2016, the construction of the Candela Pavilion in Ice will take place in Juuka, Finland. This project is part of the master dissertation of Bram Ronsse, graduate student at Ghent University, who will lead the project, under the supervision of prof. Kenny Martens will fulfill a leading role in this project. During the construction, they will be supported by a team of 1st master

students in the scope of a project work for the course 'Spatial Structures', taught by Jan Belis. The Candela Pavilion is part of a bigger project, together with the 'Bridge in Ice' by T.U. Eindhoven and the 'Snowtrack' by KU Leuven. After building the largest ice dome and the Sagrada Familia in Ice, T.U. Eindhoven already has quite some experience in structural ice. Last year Ghent University and KU Leuven also participated in the construction of the Sagrada Familia in Ice, but now, they will each build their own project, of course assisting each other along the way. The original structure was designed by Félix Candela, and can be found in San Jerónimo, Mexico. There it was built under the name 'Los Manantiales' in 1958. Originally it was designed as a restaurant, and it is still fulfilling this function up to this day. Thanks to the arc shaped lines in the pavilion (four intersection hypars), it was possible to make the original shell extremely thin: only 4cm of conrete. This concept will now be transfered to the ice construction, making use of an inflatable to spray the ice in the designated shape. The use of the word 'ice' in the title, as well in the above may be misleading, as no pure ice will be used to construct the Candela Pavilion. Instead, a composite material called 'Cellokrete' will be used, mixing cellulose fibres with plain ice, enhancing the properties of the latter.

It's hot! Since the opening of the pavilion on saturday, temperature rose and it's constantly thawing for a couple of days now. The upper layers of the pavilion are molten, puddles formed both underneath and on top of the pavilion, water is constantly dripping off, and the top already dropped almost 20cm... Let's hope the pavilion lasts as long as possible!

This night, at 4 a.m., the balloon of the Bridge in Ice collapsed due to the warm weather of the past few days... We're very sad to hear that the project will not be finished, but still we want to congratulate the students of TU Eindhoven, and in particular Thijs and Roel with their project! They did things nobody considered possible!

We also want to thank them for all the things they did for us. Without the help of TU Eindhoven, the construction of the Candela Pavilion would've never been possible.

Thursday, part of a lobe of the pavilion came down due to the warm weather... The weight of the ice pulled one of the ropes down, pulling the balloon down too. Thanks to our fantastic team, the problem was fixed very quickly, and there was no permanent damage. As soon as the temperatures go down, we will restart spraying the lost part...

The past few days, temperatures have been too high to continue spraying on the pavilion. The only thing to do was cleaning snow of the pavilion. Normally, this afternoon, temperatures should drop again, and the fresh team of volunteers can start spraying cellokrete!

The last few days, the temperature has been rising. At the moment, it is a tropic -1°C! Spraying cellokrete is impossible in these temperatures, because it doesn't freeze to the pavilion. Yesterday, it also started snowing, so our teams are constantly cleaning the snow of the top of the pavilion, because it can negatively influence the strength of the ice... Let's hope temperatures will drop again very soon!
