In many rural Fijian community, traditional knowledge and natural resources have long been used to help treat wounds, fractures, sickness and commonly illness when modern medical supplies are not easily available. This practice reflects the wisdom pass down through generations and the strong connection between the people and nature.
Commonly natural remedies includes the use of medical leaves roots, coconut oil and herbal mixtures.
For Wounds:
Certain leaves are crushed and are applied to stop bleeding or reduce infection. Heated coconut oil is also widely used to smooth cuts, bruises and muscle pain.
For Fractures or Sprain :
Bamboo, woods or strong plant are carefully tied to support injured limbs until proper treatment can be reached.
Traditional healers often understand often understand which plant can help with fever, stomach pain, cough, skin disease and other sickness. Herbal drinks made from local plants and mostly commonly prepared to cleanse the body and restore strength.
Steam bath and massage are also traditional methods used for healing and relaxation.
Although the natural resources are valuable and part of Fiji cultural identity modern medical remains important especially for injuries and diseases. Traditional knowledge and modern health care can work together to protect and strengthen rural communities.
