| On a quiet afternoon in 2009, after a game of touch rugby, Manoa Duwai sat down to eat. In front of him was a bowl of rice and cup of tea–and no fish. When he later went to the reef along the coastline of Naidiri, all he found was undersized fish struggling to survive. In that...

This month, the International Court of Justice issued a landmark ruling affirming nations binding legal obligations under international law to prevent climate harm and protect present and future generations. Led by Pacific Islander voices in 2019, the case marked the most expansive participation in the Court’s history, with over 100 states and international organisations testifying. This historic ruling is a major step forward in global climate accountability.

“There’s a connection between human beings and nature. The indigenous of every island in the Pacific, we are the custodians of our fishing grounds, so we have to take the lead.”

These powerful words from Manoa Duwai, of Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park and a recent ygap Accelerator graduate, embody that leadership.

At ygap, we are proud to walk alongside Pacific Island communities through our work with under-estimated impact entrepreneurs and partners like Tourism Fiji and Duavata Collective to nurture a local entrepreneurial ecosystem that unites sustainable livelihoods with climate resilience. This ruling is a reminder: the world is listening, and Pasifika is leading the way.

We were proud to welcome the Ministry of Foreign Affairs team to our Naidiri Marine Bio Park here in Malomalo, Nadroga. Their visit was part of their support for our coral planting initiative a vital part of our 16-year journey to protect our marine environment and sustain our community. The Ministry team joined us in learning about our coral restoration efforts, the importance of our reef system, and the way our village depends on the ocean for daily life. They had the chance to connect with our youth group, hear our stories, and witness firsthand how community-led conservation is making a difference. We’re grateful for their encouragement and continued commitment to help preserve Fiji’s marine biodiversity. Together, through partnerships, awareness and action, we can build a more sustainable future for our reefs, our people, and generations to come. 💙🐠🌍

🌊 Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park at Tourism Super Week! 🌿

Last month, our co-founder Manoa and youth team member Sanaila were honoured to be invited to Tourism Super Week in Fiji, hosted by Tourism Fiji.

As part of the event, both received tour guide training and were proud to be awarded their certificates by none other than the Hon. Viliame Gavoka, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation.

Manoa was also invited to speak on a panel discussion focused on “Collaborations in the Industry, Fostering Destination Growth, and Elevation of Guest Experience” — an important conversation that reflects our vision for inclusive and sustainable tourism in Fiji.

🌺 Vinaka vakalevu to Tourism Fiji for not only organizing such a meaningful event, but also for giving Indigenous community members a voice in shaping the future of Fiji’s tourism landscape. We’re proud to be part of this journey and look forward to building stronger collaborations across the sector.
