It's harvest time in Bordeaux right now, the vendanges, and it's my favourite season to be out in the vineyards. 🍷

Bordeaux wine has a reputation for being serious and a bit intimidating, but I promise visiting the vineyards is far more relaxed than it sounds. I've just refreshed my full guide to the wine region: all the sub-regions explained simply (including the underrated ones nobody talks about), which châteaux you can reach without a car, and how I actually plan a day out there.

This summer was a very particular one in Bordeaux.

You all saw the fires, but even beyond those two very difficult weeks, it was just so hot. There were many days when staying in Bordeaux felt almost impossible.

So naturally, my July + August list looks a little different. Most of the places I loved this summer are actually around the Gironde.

September is the best time to be in Saint-Émilion. The vendanges are starting, the light goes golden over the vines, and the village is at its liveliest before it quiets down for winter. 🍷

People always ask me which wineries are actually worth it, and whether you need a car. The good news: several of the best ones are a short walk from the village, so you can do a proper tasting day even if you came by train.

I've just updated my local's guide to the ones I'd send you to, from a convent right in the centre with cellars carved into the rock, to a family estate I've loved since my early days here, to the one the BIC pen family fills with art. Which visit matters, not just the wine.

Love my spontaneous summer visits in the South of France!
