An adventure that combines long distance bike travel with the challenge of racing the Silk Road Mountain Race.

That’s exactly what Rob MacLennan did a few months ago with a bikepacking tour that started off in Mongolia and ended at the finish line of one of the hardest ultra races in Kyrgyzstan.

Rob’s no stranger to this form of travel. His very first bike adventure saw him ride from London to Cape Town. He’s also raced a few ultras since and yearned to be able to combine the freedom of long distance travel with the intensity and challenge that racing brings.

What he ended up with was an absolute wild time through Central Asia, tracing the route of the ancient Silk Road.

It was also an adventure that was plagued with multiple equipment failures from the outset. But while many would pull the pin and call it a day, Rob persevered and always found a solution.

Even when his crank literally broke off during Silk Road Mountain Race, he pedalled with one leg for 50kms while searching for a replacement bike. All of a sudden a race to see if he was capable of mixing it up at the pointy end of the field, ended up being a race with the snail to make it to each control point and the finish line before the cut off.

Gratitude, discipline and patience were the three words Rob used to help fuel his motivation to continue making forward progress. In every single country he was shown intense hospitality and the weather extremes were as intense as all the climbs he encountered along the way.

Here’s a bike adventure through Asia with Shuhena Islam ! She didn’t grow up riding bikes, in fact she learnt how to ride aged 20 and vividly remembers those early short rides to get an ice cream as feeling like a big achievement.

Fast forward a few years and Shuhena quit her job in corporate law and set off on a bike packing adventure through seven countries in Asia.

It was great to learn how Shuhena got into cycling and also hear her perspectives of cycling solo as a Muslim woman. It was also interesting to hear how she changed her focus of travel during the trip, allowing herself to enjoy the side quests off the bike.

As always, the hospitality of complete strangers shines through. Indonesians took the prize for being the most hospitable. China was originally never part of the plan but being so close to the border how could she not go there too! It ended up being the country where she felt the safest. Mount Fuji in Japan and Mount Bromo in Indonesia were both super tough, the latter so steep that it became necessary to hitch a lift to the summit!

Lastly, I loved hearing how Shuhena was able to connect with the community throughout her trip in every country.

Planning to go bike packing in Indonesia? Hear all about what it’s like to cycle there from Olly Hargreaves - Travel etc who cycled from Java to Bali with his girlfriend Ellie Ormerod

It was an adventurous start just to make the ferry crossing from Singapore. A 36hour ferry no less and the only tickets left meant sitting on the floor the entire duration.

Once landing in Java it was clear that the terrain was going to take a lot of effort to get up and over with the steepest gradients of the entire journey so far from the UK. Olly thinks the gradients were close to 30%!

As ever the scenery got them through the physical challenge. The weather usually built up for huge thunderstorms around 4pm a lot of days.

Getting to Mount Bromo was a challenge but so rewarding and seeing the huge volcanoes in the area was energising!

If you’ve ridden the TransAmerica Trail or plan to, chances are you’ve heard of its most legendary Trail Angel Wes Murray.

This week I’ve flipped the script from interviewing bike adventurers and instead interviewed a Trail Angel super host.
Wes has been hosting cyclists passing by his place in Houston, Missouri since 2012. To date almost 300 cyclists have been hosted at ‘The Shack’, taken out for frozen custard at The Corner Store and then departed with a hearty breakfast feed at the local hospital the next morning.

Here are Wes’ top tips for giving hosting a go. What a man he is. The world would truly be a better place if there were more like him in it.

I do this to feel normal again.

Five years ago Ash Eagles was in hospital recovering from a 10hr operation to remove bone cancer from his chest. The doctors told him he wouldn’t be able to ride a bike again.

Having discovered cycling just a few years earlier Ash wasn’t prepared to give up on it. Instead, he set himself a goal that within a year he’d cycle 100kms. He’s been levelling up on the challenges ever since and seeing what he has achieved is incredible.

Ash has cycled the Adventure Cycling Association TransAmerica Trail, 4,300 miles from Oregon to Virginia, then followed that up with a fast solo effort on LEJOG. That was seen as training, to see whether he would be up for the rigours of an Ultra.

He entered the 1700km Adrian O’Sullivan from Cork to Derry and surprised himself by being the first one across the line. What an achievement!

Ash recently celebrated being five years in remission and he’s only seeing more possibilities and bike adventures ahead of him.

Would you cycle 10,000kms for a few good waves? Meet James Ryan who is currently cycling from his home in Cork, Ireland to Cape Town, South Africa.

He’s decided to take his surfboard along with him on this huge adventure and while the climbs so far in northern Spain have certainly been tough, he is stoked to be able to enjoy some surfing spots, as he eventually makes his way down the West Coast of Africa.

Fuelled by tortilla (at least 3 slices a day so far!), James says he only cycled about 3kms prior to setting off. So why bike travel and why this adventure? For James the best answer is why not? The bike gives him the perfect speed to travel and absorb what is all around him.

You can be fearful, but you don’t have to let the fear paralyse you.

Meet Paola Berber, she started riding bikes as a way to commute cheaply to university and found it really scary. Then she took an 11,000km adventure from Paris to Yerevan with her former partner, and it changed her life completely.

After the first few months she noticed the fear disappeared and she was hooked on exploring places by bike. Once back in Mexico she got into the world of mapping out bikepacking routes and it has been an amazing way for her to rediscover her own city.

She’s also gotten into racing ultras, starting out with the Tour de Frankie racing as a pair and she’s also lined up for races in Japan and Peru where both the Japanese Odyssey and the Alma Andina tested her limits to the full. The latter seeing her spend more time than she would have liked above 5000m!

With each event, Poli is pushing her own boundaries, especially when she races solo. She is fast discovering just how capable she is and hopes to be an example for more women to line up to the start line and try our racing ultras.

Saddle up for a bike adventure through Europe and Asia.

Oktawia - Unicorntravels set off for this solo adventure keen to learn more about the world and see places for herself. All along the way she was overwhelmed with the kindness and hospitality shown towards her by complete strangers.

To fund her journey she taught English lessons online each day which often meant logging on to work after a full day of cycling.

While at the start of the journey she enjoyed the flatter roads she quickly learnt the magic happens when you take the smaller roads into the mountains. Setting out solo also meant she could go at her own pace and take as much time as she’d like.

Oktawia set off from Poland and initially planned to keep heading East to Vietnam. But then when she realised that temperatures in Kazakhstan would hit minus 30C when she’d likely be there, she changed things up. She bought a one way ticket to Hanoi and then started making her way back home.

It was awesome to hear Oktawia share her experiences from taking this adventure. She reaffirms that you should never knock back an invitation to have tea and chat with a stranger as that is when the magic happens. She also shares her tips for how to take on a journey like this as a solo woman.

Could you set off on a bike adventure with no idea where you are heading? That’s exactly what Daniel T***a did!

When Daniel T***a landed in Italy for his bike adventure he had no idea where he would go. He’d thrown out his initial plans to cycle to Slovenia while on the flight and instead decided to take route advice from the strangers he would meet along the way.

Initially it felt a bit aimless, but he surrendered to the experience and embraced riding areas no bike tourers end up in. Eventually he would make it to the high mountains of the Swiss Alps or as one stranger told him, ‘the top of the sky’.

Daniel also learnt a few good life lessons along the way. One of those came with meeting Lucho, an old Italian man sat outside a cafe, who he chatted to for hours and helped him to embrace the art of doing nothing.

Another was an encounter with Walter in Switzerland who he met randomly playing his accordion in a meadow. He would later show Daniel his cabin that contained only the things he needs.

The purpose of this ride for Daniel was to try and reconnect with the childlike wonder we have growing up, where there is no sense of purpose to a game we would play and no need to strive towards a goal.

He wild camped the entirety of the trip and for food Daniel did a spot of dumpster diving where he regularly found perfectly good food thrown out by the supermarkets.
