Here’s a bike adventure coast to coast across the USA.

had grown up hearing stories from her grandparents about their ride across the USA, and in 2024 she and her partner Ash saddled up to cycle the exact same route!

They followed the TransAm Trail from Oregon to Virginia and saw parts of the USA that many tourists won’t ever visit. Becky says the highlight of the adventure where all the inquisitive locals they’d chat to in the small towns which dot the route. Everyone was curious about these two people cycling across the country.

For accommodation they mainly wild camped and were thankful for the Adventure Cycling Association routes which shared info on parks, churches and other places that cyclists would be able to camp each night.

They were also hosted by countless people including Wes from Missouri who is a legend of the TransAm trail and has hosted hundreds if not thousands of cyclists making their way across it.

Becky admits it wasn’t until they were two months into the journey that she believed shed ever reach the finish line, so she just broke the trip down into smaller milestones and ticked each one off.

Juat over three months later with 4300miles ridden, she and Ash reached the coast at Virginia. What an adventure!

Here’s an update from Brian Sampson 🇺🇸 who is currently on a bike adventure taking in the 1000 places to see before you die.

Our latest midweek episode features Brian sharing the sights and experiences he’s had since cycling through Scotland as well as Belgium and the Netherlands.

Something I love about Brian’s approach to this adventure is how he is tailoring the route to adapt to how he is feeling and what he wants to see. This adventure was spawn from reading a book called the 1000 places to see before you die and he is making his way to each of them.

He skips out on the fancy restaurants and resorts that made the list and adds in some of his own spots. Isle of Arran and Goatfell peak views being one of them.

I checked the map and the next piece of land was Greenland.

Ever imagined what it’s like to go bikepacking in the Nordic countries? Well since discovering a passion for bikepacking, Marcello Pacifici has been taking adventures to each one. It all started with him hiring the city commuter bikes to explore Helsinki and expand the map of the place he now called home. Since then he hasn’t looked back and regularly enjoys planning trips further afield, ones that will get him out into nature.

His first adventure took him all the way from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, in the Arctic Circle. He especially enjoyed how easy accessing nature in Finland is, you are never too far from a gravel road through a forest, a lake or a perfect place to camp.

He has also taken bikepacking trips to Iceland, Norway and more recently the Faroe Islands. There are more sheep than people there and it’s a place where the weather is wild, but you truly feel like you are out riding on the edge of the world.

Marcello admits that moving to Finland from Rome, has completely changed his life and a lot of that is to do with the easy access to nature and also discovering bikepacking.

I didn’t know the world could feel this big…

For hannah simon one of the best things about bike adventures has been the places it’s taken her. She’s raced her bike in four different continents, and has an adventure CV that would rival most, with both the Triple Crown (Tour Divide, Arizona Trail and Colorado Trail) and the Triple Nelson (that’s all three of the Mountain Races!) to her name.

Bikepacking has literally helped her to discover more of the world. Regardless of whether she’s racing through the landscape in an Ultra or taking it a bit more slightly chill when touring, this form of travel has given her insights into how little it is we actually need to get out there and explore (although according to Hannah you definitely want to pack a long handled spoon over a spork!)

Hannah shares how she kind of fell into this world, firstly working as a bike mechanic where one thing led to another and before she knew it she was helping to build the bike that she’d race in Morocco for the Atlas Mountain Race.

I spoke with Hannah soon after she’d wrapped up racing the Highland Trail 550 in Scotland and later this year she plans to be at the start line of the inaugural Tauras Mountain Race in Turkey.

I realised I was so much more capable than I thought.

That’s how anna ruddiman describes feeling, having successfully raced her first ultra in the Pyrenees. But how did she end up at the start line in the first place?

Well last year she had ridden from London to Turkey with her girlfriend Fran. She loved the slow travel aspect of bikepacking but was also curious to see how far she could push herself if she decided to line up for an ultra race.

She chose El Piri, an event in the Spanish Pyrenees and started training. She’d be doing hill reps out in the Surrey Hills near London trying to replicate the demands of riding up mountains!

She turned up to the start line filled with nervous anticipation for what would follow. The mountainous terrain was definitely physically demanding, but her energy levels rose with each and every sunrise and sunset. It’s funny how landscapes so grand can have that impact on you!

I really feel like when I’m on my bike, this is where I need to be, and it feels really complete in a certain sense.

This is how describes how he felt while on his huge bikepacking adventure from Alaska to New York. It was a dream, not without its physical challenges and starting out in Alaska during winter certainly tested him out.

After suffering with frost bitten fingers and enduring temps as low as minus 30C, he decided to change things up, took a flight to Vancouver and eventually rode all the way down the Pacific Coast taking in the sights of Big Sur along the way.

After a magical time spent at Joshua Tree he’d run out of money so had to head back to Belgium and work. But there was never a doubt bed return to continue the adventure.

A few months later he arrived in Louisiana and then started making his way East. Crossing Texas felt like an endless state, but he’d eventually get into the Arizona Trail and reach the Grand Canyon. Another highlight was the Colorado Trail, even though he feels a sense of ‘unfinished business’ which has left him wanting to return to ride the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route.

Eventually Jimmy reached New York City to bring a close to what turned out to be an incredible journey.

Our latest midweek episodes shares an update from adventurer Daragh Cronin who has had to reassess his route plans due to his arrival in India coinciding with Monsoon season.

Daragh set off from his home in Cork, Ireland with a goal of getting to Everest Base Camp. He was making great progress and actually reached India ahead of schedule. But unfortunately the adventure is now on pause for a few months.

The plan is to spend two full years cycling around the world.

Meet Juan Pablo and Paula, two adventurers from Chile who’ve been on the road for the last 18months and still have so much more they want to see. They set off on this journey just a few weeks after they got married and believe the best part of seeing the world on a bike is the ability to stop to take it all in, at the right pace.

They especially love mountains and their route will prioritise being in those kinds of landscapes. Although they also believe you can get too much of a good thing and believe that incorporating variation in terms of landscapes is important to not overdo things and get jaded.

Another fun fact, prior to setting odd on the trip Paula’s longest ride was 24kms! Juan Pablo on the other hand had experienced a huge solo bike journey of 19,000kms so it’s no surprise he wanted Paula to join him for this next epic adventure.

So far it’s taken them to some incredible places, Morocco, China, Europe, Kyrgyzstan to just to name a few. They also shared some great tips on how to travel as a couple and keep things harmonious!

Sad to hear the news of the passing of Heinz Stücke. A true legend of our community who spent over 51 years cycling around the world.

I was fortunate to meet Heinz last year at his home and my lasting memory was him saying that in his mind he was still travelling. There can be no doubt his adventures have inspired many others to travel as well.

Thank you Heinz. You are a legend and I’d like to think that you are out there somewhere now still travelling.

More hairpin bends than Alpe d’Huez…

Luz Ardiden is a favourite climb in the Haute Pyrenees and with over 30 switchbacks to negotiate to get to the top, it makes for an impressive view at the summit.
