D-Day beaches now part of UNESCO World Heritage List.
Recognition of their 'outstanding universal value' commits authorities to work toward their preservation.
The Five Landing Beaches:
• Utah Beach: The westernmost American landing sector on the Cotentin Peninsula.
• Omaha Beach: The heavily defended American sector known for intense combat.
• Gold Beach: The British landing zone centered around Ver-sur-Mer and Arromanches.
• Juno Beach: The Canadian landing sector near Courseulles-sur-Mer.
• Sword Beach: The easternmost Anglo-French landing zone near Ouistreham.
And La Pointe du Hoc.
