Becket School tour, June 2025

The Becket School's tour focussed on a partnership with College Jean Castel in Argences. Thank you to Emily John, MFL Teacher from Becket School for compiling this review:

"We travelled to Normandy with French Friendships at the end of June 2025. We took 67 students and 7 staff.

Of particular interest to us was building a link with a French school, and our morning in school with dedicated "Exchange" lessons was hopefully the beginning of many French friendships amongst our students and their French peers.

Chris was helpful throughout, always on the end of the phone if and when we needed support.
Our group of students were Year 8s. We took them to Festyland for the afternoon, and they (and we) found it to be just the right size for the large group to have some safe fun with secure remote supervision. The rides were appropriate for this age group, with rides for those seeking more adrenaline, as well as calmer (but no less fun) rides for the more unsure.

Our visit to the fromagerie allowed our students to experience some of the cheese- based specialities of the region. This was a real culture experience for many, opening their eyes to the variety of different cheeses available in France.

Arromanches itself, as well as the museum and 360 cinema are not to be missed. This provided a rich cultural experience for our students to learn about D-day, the Mulberry harbours, and to really see for themselves the experiences of those wartime soldiers. This linked very nicely with the History curriculum that many of them were studying.

The Basilica of Saint Therese was a magnificent edifice which we loved visiting. Our guide was informative and clear. She answered a wide range of questions with in-depth knowledge and thoughtful consideration. The climb to the top of the Tower was not for the fainthearted but the views from the top were superlative. I would recommend.

We stayed at the Foyer de Louis et Zelie Martin, run by nuns. The accommodation was clean and comfortable. There were common rooms on each floor, which the young people enjoyed meeting up in the evenings in, as well as a function room where we held a pizza night- much to everyone's delight! There was a large grassed area at the back of the Foyer, where our young people enjoyed playing boules, cricket and impromptu games of football. The breakfast was cornflakes, plain yoghurt, breads, butter and jams, served with a glass of juice, hot chocolate, coffee, or warm milk. Evening meals consisted of a pizza night with takeaway pizzas; spaghetti Bolognese, a meal at a local restaurant where everyone had burgers (rare steak haché was a challenge for some students admittedly), and a nuggets and rice night at the Foyer. We would have liked croissants at breakfast but everything else was great and they catered for our dietary requirements well.

Communication both before and during the trip was a real strength and we really appreciated the promptness of replies to our queries.

Review of the driver: Parvindra was our driver throughout our trip to Normandy. He was courteous and helpful at all times, drove us smoothly throughout Normandy and clearly knew his was round this area. On the long journey there and back, he took us to appropriate Service Stations which were ideally suited to our young people as we could both buy items, but also eat picnics.

The coach was always kept clean and comfortable, and he was always willing to modify the heating to suit individuals' needs.

He was willing to be flexible with plans, when we needed to make last minute changes to the itineraries. He drove us comfortably and confidently through the countryside, including some challenging villages, and we always felt safe and secure.

He was a great favourite with the young people for being a genuinely kind and interested person.

We would recommend him to anyone."

Sir William Romney's School, June 2025

Following on from their 2024 tour, we followed a similar structure for their 2025 tour. Two days of activities around here, with aerial trekking at Beauregard Aventure, the D-Day experience at Arromanches 360, a visit of the Basilica Saint Therese de Lisieux, and an afternoon at Cerza, Normandy’s safari-style zoo. The central day of the tour was a day-trip to Parc Asterix, pure fun enjoyed by all!

QUOTE: ‘We have used French Horizons twice for our Year 7 trip to France, and both trips have been brilliant. I've been running trips overseas since I started teaching a decade ago now, and their service is second-to-none. They use a team of reliable, friendly, and helpful drivers and both Chris and the drivers have an incredible knowledge of the local area. Chris tailors the trips to our needs, is flexible, helpful and thoughtful. He's always on-hand to sort any queries and the communication and planning is flawless. The area is beautiful, and there are so many different activities available for groups of all age and size. We are already booked in for next year, and looking forward to setting up a penpal scheme with a local Normandie school. Merci from all of us here at Sir William Romney's!’

West Sussex Music, July 2025

A wonderful week of music with the West Sussex Music youth orchestra and wind band! Staying at the Orangerie Bourg Saint Leonard, their first performance was at the ‘Soirée Illuminée’ organised by Chateau Canon, performing open-air on the lawns as the public had their picnics. After an afternoon of fun on the bobsleighs at Clecy Gliss, they then performed at the ‘Soirée Musicale’ organised by Chateau Kinnor. The orchestra performed in the church, then a second half of solos and small ensemble performances took place in the stunning chateau. The third day was in partnership with the local music festival Promenades Musicales du Pays d’Auge, and the performance led on to a concert given by Trio Helios, which all the students stayed on to watch after performing. A lovely restaurant dinner nearby brought the tour to a close. Great audiences, beautiful venues, a tour to remember!

Christopher Whitehead Language College, June 2025
A partnership was created with the Lycée Augustin Fresnel in Bernay for this tour. The visiting group spent a full day with the French students, with the morning in the school and the afternoon visiting the pretty town of Bernay. This led on to an evening in Honfleur with a Creperie restaurant dinner. The following day incorporated a D-Day experience in Arromanches, with both the 360 cinema and the D-Day Museum, leading on to an afternoon of fun at Festyland. The tour coincided with the Fete de la Musique, and so an entertaining evening in Lisieux was had by all, listening to the performances all over the town and enjoying the atmosphere.

QUOTE: Thank you SO much for all your excellent planning! We have had a fantastic trip!! Hopefully see you next year as you have been great! Merci tout plein! L’équipe de Christopher Whitehead Language College (Marine, Victoria, James, Ruth et les élèves !)

Gunnersbury Catholic School, June 2025

A continuation of the school partnership established in 2024 between Gunnersbury Catholic School and College Marcel Gambier, Lisieux. Gunnersbury’s 2025 tour followed a similar structure to the previous year, with accommodation this time at Maison Saint Georges. The first day of the tour was spent with the French students in Lisieux, both at the college and also visiting the Basilica Saint-Therese de Lisieux and the Merimee Chocolaterie. The following day had visits to Arromanches 360, the Bayeux Tapestry, then a restaurant dinner in central Lisieux to complete the tour.

QUOTE: Thank you Chris for another fantastic week in Normandy! Working with French Horizons is always a pleasure and very straightforward. Nothing is too much trouble and the programme of visits, including a day in a local school, is very flexible and just what we are looking for with our Year 8 pupils. The accommodation is by far the best we have come across on any school trip. Can’t wait to come again next year. Merci infiniment !

Oldfield Brow Primary School, May 2025

After enjoying their first tour in May 2024, the friendship between Oldfield Brow Primary School and Ecole Caubriere Honfleur continued in May 2025. During their stay, the visiting group spent a full day with their French friends both at the school and around Honfleur. After a welcome session with croissants and juice, the children spent time together in classrooms before heading across the road to rehearse their musical items. Oldfield Brow’s school choir joined forces with Ecole Caubriere’s brass band for a fun selection of pieces based around a ‘monsters’ theme!
After lunch at the canteen, the whole group went off to explore Honfleur, making it all the way to the beach! The day was completed with a concert given to the French parents and live-streamed to the English parents, then dinner at a creperie restaurant next to the port.
The next day was spent with a combination of the market morning in Bayeux followed by the Chateau Guillaume Le Conquerant in Falaise.
Dates are set for 2026, and Ecole Caubriere are planning a return trip to Oldfield Brow for 2027.

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, 18th-21st May 2025

This tour saw a great partnership develop between Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School and Ecole Bon Pasteur in Lisieux. The children from years 5 and 6 spent two full mornings at the French school, where they enjoyed a combination of music, sports, and classroom games. With afternoon visits to the Chateau Guillaume Le Conquerant, Village Fromager, and a mass service at the Basilica Saint Therese, this was a wonderfully packed itinerary which simply flew by! Dates are in the diary for 2026 and the children will keep writing to one another through the year.

Orchard Mead tour, 21st to 25th April 2025

A remarkably in-depth experience for the students and teachers from Orchard Mead Academy, with three days spent in partnership with the students from Collège Fernand Lechanteur in central Caen. Each day was structured with a full morning at the school, where the students divided off into various smaller groups to spend time experiencing the regular timetabled lessons with their French penpals, followed by canteen lunch all together.

Reddiford Prep School tour, 29th March to 2nd April 2025

The lovely primary school group from Reddiford Prep School enjoyed a fun weekend with us, based along similar lines to their tour with us in 2024. Sunday was a day of History, with a guided tour of the Basilica Saint Therese de Lisieux (all those steps up to the dome right at the top!). This overlapped with rehearsals at the venue with the visiting choral group from Ipswich High School, and the Reddiford children enjoyed listening to the sounds of the choir echoing round the dome! The afternoon was spent in Falaise with a visit of the Chateau de Guillaume Le Conquerant.

Ipswich High School music tour, 28th to 31st March 2025

A close link with the town of Honfleur for the Ipswich High School choir tour. They stayed at the Hotel Ibis Centre Historique, right in the heart of the old town, and their tour centred on their involvement in the local arts festival Paroles Paroles, run by local author/artist/creative Vanessa Simon-Catelin. Their first concert was in the picture-postcard village of Barneville La Bertran, at the pretty church which was opened up specially for the festival. A local watercolour artist was present too, producing some paintings during the course of the concert! That evening they went to watch a violinist-rapper (!) perform in one of a series of concerts at the Greniers a Sel. Their tour was completed with a performance at the prestigious Sunday Mass service at the Basilica Saint Therese de Lisieux. A fun and intense musical weekend!
