At Notre-Dame-des-Passes, the Virgin faces the horizon, as she has for generations watching over the fishermen of the Arcachon bay. This chapel remains one of the bay’s quiet treasures and we’re so grateful to include it in our private tours along the bay. 🙏🏼

Standing before the Monument dedicated to the Memory of the Girondins, it’s impossible to forget that the Revolution was also written here. Erected in honor of the deputies executed during the Reign of Terror, this monument reminds us that the ideals of 1789 spread far beyond Paris and that Bordeaux had its voices and its martyrs.

Unique in its symbolism, this monument reflects a complex moment in French history. The Girondins supported a republic but hoped to preserve a constitutional monarchy. A vision that did not survive the Revolution’s most radical phase.

Today, we celebrate a national holiday and a local memory that of a city that played a full part in the republican history of France.
