One thing we know for definite, is you cannot plan for the weather in Scotland. However, this June has been a little more damp and gloomy than usual. Some would say it adds to the mystery and charm of the place. Whenever you visit the coastal villages of Aberdeenshire, you can admire the beauty of them in all their guises. You just have to be ready for them. As the saying goes, there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing!

It's not often we have some free time to have a wander through parts of Old Aberdeen. Here are our highlights from a visit to this historic part of the city.

This week we met up with several cruise ships and cruise passengers. We did wonder where the ship was for while as it was so foggy, but she made it in safe and well. Thankfully the haar was only near the coast and by the time we made it to the Falls of Feugh the sun appeared (briefly). The river Feugh was in full flow after a few days of rain and it makes a big impression when thundering down to meet up with the river Dee.

Strange things are happening at the Tomnaverie Stone circle near Tarland 🤔. The views of the Howe of Cromar are beautiful but visitors do love getting in touch with the stones. Whether its for a few moments of quiet contemplation or wonder about the heritage of the circles, most people are in awe of them. (Unless the floor is lava? 🔥)

Tolquhon Castle is one of Scotland’s most impressive and picturesque castle ruins. Originally dating back to the 12th century, the castle was extensively rebuilt in the late 1500s by Sir William Forbes into a grand fortified residence that combined comfort with defence. The castle is particularly famous for its magnificent entrance gateway, decorated with carved stone details and the Forbes family coat of arms.

Visitors can explore the large central courtyard, the remains of the great hall, private chambers, kitchens, and hidden staircases that once formed part of daily castle life. Although now roofless, Tolquhon Castle remains a fascinating glimpse into Renaissance architecture and the lifestyle of Scotland’s noble families, surrounded by peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside.

Pitsligo Castle, near the coastal village of Rosehearty in Aberdeenshire, is a striking ruined castle dating back to the 15th century. Originally built by the Forbes family, the castle was expanded over the centuries with impressive towers, courtyards, and defensive walls overlooking the Moray Firth.

Pitsligo Castle played an important role in local history and was associated with the Jacobite movement before falling into ruin after the 1745 uprising. Today, the atmospheric remains are a interesting historic site, offering visitors a glimpse into Scotland’s medieval past and dramatic coastal heritage

It's always exciting to discover somewhere you have not been before. A recent visit to the coastal path near Kinneff was wonderful. A quiet corner to sit and watch the sea and birds swooping around the cliffs.

Had a wonderful visit to the Bullers of Buchan. To spot some seabirds colonies making nests on the cliffs but mostly to sit and admire the stunning cliffs and coastlines. Blessed with sun and gentle breeze this afternoon.
