⬇️ AFTERNOON TEA AT EDINBURGH CASTLE ⬇️

I took a trip across the pond for a fortnight in the UK.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 It was my first time in Scotland and one of the highlights had to be that time we had tea in Edinburgh…

🏰 Afternoon tea — inside that is! I didn’t even know that was a thing, but as soon as I found out, I knew we were in for a Royal treat.

💷 For £60, you get entrance to the castle AND an amazing afternoon tea experience with a glass of prosecco or gin (which is the perfect way to finish a day at the castle).

⏱️ We booked the first slot of the day (highly recommend), showed up about 90 minutes early to explore the castle grounds before it got too crowded, and then headed to the Queen Anne Building tucked into Crown Square, where we were shown to our table.

🍽️ Here’s what was on the menu:

🥗There is a vegetarian option that looked delicious, but I went with the traditional menu for my first-ever afternoon tea!

🫖 To sip:
- Choice of coffee or tea
- Choice of Prosecco or gin

🍉 Amuse-bouche:
- Fresh melon with cucumber + micro mint

🍰 Top tier (sugar and sweets):
- Sticky toffee slice with caramel sauce + raspberries
- Banoffee pie with chantilly cream + dark chocolate
- Orange macaron with white chocolate ganache
- Scottish strawberry tart with vanilla & milk chocolate pastry

🥐 Middle tier (scones, because…scones):
- Fresh buttermilk fruit + plain scones, served with strawberry jam & clotted cream

🧀 Lower tier (savory treats):
- Bruschetta with Scottish buffalo mozzarella, pesto + balsamic glaze
- Coronation chicken with cucumber ribbon
- Smoked beetroot salmon with avocado on rye
- Egg salad brioche with spinach + sun-dried tomato
- Crowdie cheese & leek quiche

☎️ Pre-book your table and plan for at least an hour to relax and savor. We enjoyed every sip and bite for about 90 minutes and could have stayed longer!

How do you travel? Solo travel is kinda my jam. Of course I still travel with friends or family from time to time, but the majority of my travels in the last 12 years have been by myself.

Traveling alone, especially as a woman, can seem daunting but it doesn’t have to be. I’ll be sharing more about solo travel throughout 2023 but to get you started here is a list of 23 tips for taking your 1st (or any) solo trip:

1. Say “yes” to new experiences
2. Don’t over plan
3. Be flexible
4. Take in local events
5. Start your day early
6. Learn a new skill by taking a local class
7. Don’t over pack
8. Take a walking tour
9. Sign up for a small group tour
10. Know before you go - do your research
11. Learn a few words/phrases in local language
12. Explore - don’t hide in your hotel, coffee shops, a book, etc.
13. It’s ok to “get lost”/wander
14. Become a regular
15. Never share “real time” locations online
16. Be smart - don’t do dumb s**t you wouldn’t do at home
17. Be patient
18. Trust your gut
19. Leave a copy of important travel details/documents with someone back home
20. Take pictures but don’t forget to enjoy your time
21. Try something local - what is the destination known for?
22. Start small - don’t overwhelm yourself with a 3 month trip, unless you want to
23. Just go!

These tips aren’t just for the solo traveler, you can apply them to all types of travel! 😃

R.I.P. Betty White 💔😭

One of my favorite memories is having dinner with Betty White at the Daytime Emmy’s Governor’s Ball in 2007. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, was coming up to ask her for pictures and she would graciously oblige each time. In between daytime stars, mostly soap opera actors, she went around the table getting to know a little about each of us. We snapped this picture on a disposable camera and I don’t even care about the bad quality.

😜Do you see she’s sticking her tongue out?! Oh Betty 😂

Have you traveled with your mom? And I’m not talking about the family vacations you took growing up. In the past few years my mom and I have shared travels to Morocco, Fiji and Napa Valley (📸). And we’ve just started planning a trip together for my 40th birthday in November! (Taking recommendations now 😀)

I flew back from Guadalajara, Mexico last night so that I could vote today! While millions of people mail their ballots, I prefer actually going to the polls. Of course I’d rather everyone vote the same as me but honestly I’d rather you vote against me than not at all (and then we can talk later about why you’re wrong🤣). Have you voted yet?

I love discovering all the hidden gems in Buellton! One of my favorites has been Industrial Way, a walkable street filled with tasting rooms and distilleries and makes for the perfect boozy walking tour. The area known as Industrial Wine Works is a cute cooperative area of Industrial Way where you’ll find this most amazingly adorable vintage trailer at while enjoying their sparkling wine. 🥂

I took a little road trip up PCH to discover the most delightful getaway in . On the way to dinner we stopped to feed some ostriches. Have you heard of Ostrich Land? Neither had I but trust me: you need to go!

In all honesty I hate birds and was a little apprehensive at first but that quickly went away. First, let me tell you how frickin’ aggressive and ornery ostriches can be but only because they know you’re suppose to have food for them. Second, they don’t like having their photo taken and will try to eat your phone while you take a photo burst. Luckily my hand was protecting/holding my phone and they don’t have teeth.
All this and I still had a good time. It was actually quite fascinating, interesting and fun. If Ostrich Land wasn’t on your list before definitely make sure it is now!

✌🏼This is how I throw a tantrum for the camera when I don’t want to leave, it’s a tad more civil than when I would throw myself on the grocery store floor. *sorry mom, love you 😘

But for real, I just started exploring the gardens at Nove Hrady Chateau (see yesterday’s post) and it’s already time to go...maybe if I was a little (*cough* A LOT) quicker at getting through the life sized maze I would have had more time. 🤷🏼‍♀️

The fairytale continues...and I never want it to end. ✨This is Nove Hrady Chateau, aka the Czech Versailles. I haven’t been to Versailles yet 😱 but I can tell you that the property here is gorgeous and filled with beautiful flower gardens, abundant vegetable gardens, fountains and even a life size maze! 💐🍅

Can you believe that people really do still live here? I thought how awesome that would be until I realized there would be tourists romping through my property.
